SUPPORTING FUTURE FEMALE PERCUSSIONISTS
“This scholarship exemplifies the impact my mother had on my education and career. I am delighted that I can now continue her legacy and support young percussionists in their pursuit of excellence in classical music.”
Heritage Society member Marilyn Rife first came to Interlochen five decades ago as a Junior Girl studying percussion in 1966. Her five summers at Camp and two years at Academy were formative experiences for a career as a professional percussionist—first with the San Antonio Symphony and then with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Oregon Symphony Orchestra, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Today, she serves as the Director of Orchestra Personnel with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

With her deeply-held appreciation of In- terlochen, Marilyn wanted to help young female percussionists have a transformative artistic experience. This led her to create the Shirley and Marilyn Rife Family Scholarship Endowment in her estate plans. The support of Marilyn’s family was also critical to her success. Her mother, Shirley, was a partner in all of her endeavors. Marilyn recognizes the important role that Shirley played by including her in the scholarship endowment name. Shirley was an advocate for her daughter during a time when women were less represented in professional classical music. Marilyn’s planned gift will enable her to give future female percussionists support and encouragement as they transform their potential into purpose at Interlochen.
