INTERLOCHEN PUBLIC RADIO
Starting Strong in its Seventh Decade Interlochen Public Radio is off to a strong start for its seventh decade. IPR, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2023, connects the world to northern Michigan, and northern Michigan to the world, in an astonishing array of settings.
Through both FM and digital sources, fans of IPR Classical—listening from kitchens, cars, or beach blankets along the shores of Lake Michigan—connect to a millennium of classical music and a century of Interlochen artistry. Live performance broadcasts take curious ears to the Kresge Auditorium stage and into IPR’s Studio A, while shows like Kids Commute and The Interlochen Collection guide listeners into both the promising future of classical music and our own, cherished past. Like its sister station, IPR News goes almost anywhere. Shows like Points North and The Up North Lowdown offer deep dives into northern Michigan and are also enjoyed far beyond the Great Lakes. IPR News
is turning heads all over, too, as it continues to win laurels for its carefully crafted journalism, with one national and four regional Edward R. Murrow awards in the past year and three awards from the Public Media Journalists Association (PMJA). There’s immense potential for IPR to amplify its reach and impact. Donor and listener support for IPR means the station is here to stay, always ready to take listeners to new places. Thanks to you, IPR is present here—and all over the world.
Sound Garden Brings Music to New Audiences in New Settings Classical IPR’s Sound Garden Project “plants classical music in unexpected places” throughout northern
Michigan. Its featured chamber ensembles bring unique live concerts to atypical venues, sparking the joy of musical discovery with new audiences. In the past year, the ensembles listed below have performed in spaces such as pontoon boats, book- stores, farmer’s markets, outdoor restaurants, and auto repair shop waiting rooms—in addition to IPR’s Studio A:
“We want to give everyone an opportunity to experience world-class musicians up close and on people’s own turf. It has been incredible witnessing such intimate exchanges and seeing the deep impact the music has on people, often for the first time!” — Matthew Schlomer, Artistic Director, Sound Garden Project
