Giving Hands and Hearts to Help Interlochen

It takes many hands and hearts to sustain all that Interlochen offers. On campus and around the world, volunteers participate in and support the artistry at Interlochen by giving their time. We couldn’t be more grateful. On campus, it’s easy to identify them by the green vests they’re wearing. Throughout each year, our Green Vest Volunteers serve in numerous roles as ushers, greeting and guiding concert-goers, planting flowers, giving tours, and more. Nearly 500 members

of our community donned the green vest in 2023-24, more than 60 of them first-year volunteers. Other types of Interlochen volunteers include those who answer phones during IPR fundraising drives; sew costumes for theatre performances; support fundraising and stewardship efforts; and engage with potential students and parents at outreach events nationwide. Volunteer teams include the Campus Philanthropy Ambassadors, Student Philanthropy Team, and the Interlochen Annual Funds Committee.

Helping the Garden Grow

There are many ways for volunteers to help artistry grow at Interlochen. One of those ways is to help the garden grow— literally—inside Interlochen’s greenhouses. That’s what volunteers Gordon and Lauren Berg have done at our R. B. Annis Botanical Lab and Community Garden. As Green Vest Volunteers, the Bergs have given their time recently to assist in our sustainability efforts. Since 2015, they’ve volunteered more than 270 hours on campus in numerous ways. That’s on top of the years Gordon was an employee (ICA St 07-15). And, in 2021, Gordon and Lauren increased their involvement by establishing the Berg Family Jazz Endowed Camp Scholarship. Thanks to Gordon and Lauren’s generosity of time and treasure, creativity and environmental stewardship will continue to take root at Interlochen for decades to come.

“Supporting Interlochen with our time and resources is one of the most gratifying activities we do. Thank you for the opportunity to be both donors and volunteers.” — Lauren and Gordon Berg
