WITHOUT LIMITS – ICON OF THE SPORT – JIM BISS

Jim Biss – Without Limits – The Ultimate Icon Written by Lee Fribbins – Editor of The Racing Pigeon, Racing Pictorial International Jim Biss was one of if not the greatest fanciers to have ever graced our shores. The sport of pigeon racing in the UK had in Jim Biss an extraordinary talent that made him certainly one of the Ultimate Icons of his generation but also one of the greatest exponents in Europe of all time. Jim was one of those fanciers that didn’t just get a performance a season that for many would be once in a life time that those fanciers would be proud of but created a team of pigeons that

Michael Shepherd INTER COUNTIES FEDERATION Inter Counties Fed kicked off the new season on Saturday April 13th from Stoney Cross with everyone keen to see the new transporter. Members entered approxi- mately 2,580 birds which was quite a respectable total when one considers the weather conditions have not been that favourable for training. Convoyer, Harry Burgin, cut the strings at 11.15am and the birds were away in a south west wind. As expected the birds made short work of this one. Leading the Fed is the Baldock partnership of Colin Crick & Son on 1996.7, in 2nd with just a fag paper separating them is Fed Secretary Dave Housden on 1996.2 followed by Colin Crick & Son again on 1994.

achieved results many could only dream of on a week after week basis and season after season. In this book I take a look at Jim’s life, his racing methods, his lofts and the infamous pigeons that made him a household name with descendants of his fine team still

winning around the world today. A true gentleman and Icon of the sport.

Old friend Kev Clark from Hatfield sent me an email. He was saying his birds are doing okay and their eggs were hatching out all together which is great news. I was also chatting with friend Steve Allan of Gretna. Steve is always working and time is precious so Steve only gets the birds out on week- ends, makes life very difficult when the racing season comes round. Then I was having a chinwag with David Dowell there is a Moot in Carlisle in April, Dave was saying with top flyers on the menu so that’s okay. Wednesday 20th March as I attempt to write a few notes for this column. These notes are for those of us that don’t quite make the prize table and to help the new starter get onto the prize list. It is my main priority within the pigeon game to get fanciers onto winning ways. Sometimes my basic notes really are just that basic, but if we can learn the basics in a proper manner, then we can move onto greater things. So for the new starter and us unfortunates that try hard but don’t quite get the just rewards for our efforts, this is where it all begins, we have a good loft well ventilated, one to two feet off the ground facing a southerly direc- tion. We incorporate into the loft and old bird side with nesting boxes, a middle

section for trapping our birds in then a young bird section, we try to build the loft with a peaked roof with pantiles on and an inside ceiling for freedom of air around the loft with louvres at the back and front of loft. A sliding door fitted with a sputnik trap on front and a centre door is very useful. The loft size could be 18ft x 6ft x 6ft till peak of 10ft in centre of loft. If we can manage to have a good loft there is many benefits gained for our pigeons also we want a dry loft with platform on the front with steps up to loft. I like those lofts with Sputnik traps fitted along the front, these are very useful to our youngsters and old birds. A lot of this loft can be built at a reason- ably cost if we can build it ourselves, have to say lots of pigeon lofts well constructed have been built with new wooden pallets which can be collected up, you might know someone who can help out with this or some of them packing cases that farm machinery comes in, often this is just burned at farm machine shops or put into skips, there is nothing wrong with asking at these places. Oh well I hope this helps the new starter also I had my birds away again yesterday from a place called Caldbeck Fell about 12 miles or so, one missing. Glenny

Had the youngsters out in the after- noon about 3 o’clock, they are starting to fly now. They dart about the place learning what it’s all about, two have gone adrift somewhere. Trouble I have heard is that a group of townies come past daily and they can take my young- sters off with them. Sometimes you see them turning back up a few days later but often that’s them they’ve gone. I often think to myself well it is one way of finding them out, if they have anything about them then they will return. I’m keeping them fairly hungry when I let them out and I notice that they have been coming back into their lofts when I call them in, so we have a bit of control over them. I’m feeding them fifty per cent racing mix and fifty percent depurative and I’m mixing natural bio yoghurt from Marks and Spencer’s on their corn daily, it is all good for them , March 17th as I’m writing down these

few notes. Managed to get all the pigeons cleaned out today and got a few taken up the road for a short trainer. I take eight at any one time, the reason being in case of Perigrine’s in this area plus my birds have to break off from the main drag going up into west Cumbria, so over the last 14 or so years I’ve tried to make it easier for my racers. I train from Caldbeck Fell then onto Cockermouth Aspatria as that is the direction of where my birds come from most of the time. I also train my birds later on from Penrith and Shap also Tebay. These three areas can be dangerous because of birds of prey. I train them along with old friend D Dowell and we share the cost. The birds today from the trainer were back before I got back so was well pleased with them, I will just keep on plodding away with them and hope we can get onto the result later on with my few street walkers.
