WHAT’S HAPPENING IMN | WARNOCK We‘ve enjoyed the Big Read this year, and are feeling very appreciative of our lives after reading Breaker Boys, and Brave Girl! The older students made a slide show comparing what life was like then and now. All of the students created a fabric art piece using after learning about the history of fabric/textiles. We’ve centered our weekly cooking around foods from other countries, which lead to our study of breads and yeast. We’re meeting monthly on Zoom with several other one-room schools in Oregon, and breaking into our grade level classes, establishing group names and mascots, and working on math and problem solving. PRE-K | MCWATERS We created bags for the Mushers that included turning each of our kiddos into an eaglet, because we’re the baby eagles of the school! We started a fun project called Hearts Across America, where the kids are learning about far and wide our nation is, and we connect with other preschools all around our country! We have sent out a Valentine’s letter to each state and have already received 15 back! In February students will have their 2nd goal check-in, and many kiddos are exceeding their goals already! We are so excited to celebrate Valentine’s Day with our class and three birthdays back-to-back-to-back! Our goal is to get at least one back from each state by Valentine’s Day, and hope to receive more! K | SHETLER This month we dove into learning the story of The Little Red Hen. The kids learned if you don’t put in the work, you don’t get the reward! We had a lot of fun, cracking eggs, mixing flour and yeast and baking bread. Puppets and a pop up setting were made by each student to put on a puppet show for their families. Looks like the bread was delicious! February is almost here and the students are in charge of creating their own Valentine’s Day box during STEAM class. They will draw, design, and then work on creating their Valentine’s Day box to be ready and functioning for their February 14th class party! 1ST | BLANKENSHIP First Grade had an exciting time learning about sled dogs. The best part is going downtown to see the sled dogs during the vet check. The students were able to pet a few dogs and watch the veterinarians examine different dogs.
2ND | LYMAN After learning about sled dogs, second grade was excited to go downtown to meet the mushers and see the sled dog teams. This month, we look forward to learning about natural disasters and working on writing a research paper. 3RD | OLSON Students are engaged in math learning, practicing division by making equal groups and finding the quotient. We are also learning about Tthe Maidu and The Sioux Native American tribes. In addition, we are writing sentences using the conjunction ‘because’. We will finish our Native American tribe studies with the Seminole and Iroquois tribes. 4TH | GROVER Visiting the sled dogs on Main Street for the vet checks was a highlight of the month! Students also spent time at the Community Center learning about sled dog race positions, commands, and facts. In math, students are mastering multi-digit division and preparing to design dream houses to kick off area and perimeter lessons. Research on Native American Tribes continues in Social Studies. This month, students will present their Native American slideshows. 5TH | ROBYN We have been working with decimals and multiplication this past month. Counting back change at our “store” was fun because we practiced and ate treats. See photo. We also completed an art piece about our hopes for 2025 and are currently studying the van Gogh family and creating a self portrait in the van Gogh style. This month, we look forward to finishing our van Gogh self portrait and also developing our understanding of water and how it turns into snow. We hope to head out to Iwetemlaykin to study snow in more detail. 6TH | HITE In January, our class won the attendance award and celebrated with some pizza from Embers. The Big Read inspired us to study immigration and learn new note taking strategies for non fiction articles to Iwetemlaykin to study snow in more detail. On February 14th we will end our raffle fundraiser for our Oregon Coast field trip, please contact a 6th grader for your tickets. As a class we will continue studying nonfiction articles, two column notes and perfect paragraphs.

extraordinary gift—a 1942 Piper J5 Cub— thanks to the generous donation of Rich Cason from Elgin. Pictured alongside JCS aviation teacher Alexis Hamell, Cason’s contribution will provide students with a unique hands-on opportunity to engage in aircraft restoration and maintenance. The project promises to be an invaluable learning experience, offering students real-world aviation skills while preserving a piece of aviation history. This spring, students will collaborate with their teacher and local certified airframe and powerplant mechanics to carefully remove the aircraft’s wings and transport it by trailer from Elgin to their classroom in Joseph. Once at the school, the students will begin the process of assessing and restoring the historic aircraft, with the ambitious goal of making it airworthy once again. The school community is deeply grateful to Rich Cason for his generosity and commitment to inspiring future generations of aviation enthusiasts.

BUSINESS & TECH | NALL This month several classes have had community members come in to speak about financial institutions, money management, and their experience owning a business. Students have been engaged and asking great questions as they absorb life skills from professionals. Along those lines, students have also been introduced to monopoly where they will use their monopoly transactions to create financial statements. PERFORMING ARTS | HOMAN K-3 learned Mexican & Russian Folk Dances. The 7-12th band is preparing to play Pep Band at the last home basketball game of the season. The 5th & 6th bands are starting to work on spring concert music. On February 26, the 7-12 Band and the 4-6 Drama classes will be attending the Elgin Opera House production of Beetlejuice Jr. LANGUAGE ARTS Students are reading “Kids on Strike,” “The Breaker Boys,” and “The Cold Millions” in conjunction with Fishtrap’s The Big Read. On February 5th, juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to meet Jess Walter, the author of “The Cold Millions” at Fishtrap for a brief reading and question/answer session.
