COVID-19 Reporting Interest in IPR continued to rise as the global pandemic became a local crisis. IPR reporters were in the field seven days a week, developing stories representative of our rural and underserved audiences. In response to the COVID-19 crisis, IPR created a dedicated weekly COVID-19 newsletter and a COVID-19 Tracker that details state-confirmed presumptive positive COVID-19 cases in northern Michigan. Donor support fueled these expanded efforts with an overwhelmingly successful Spring 2020 Drive for Listener Support.
A LIFETIME CONNECTED TO THE LAND
One champion of the new Science and Conservation Desk this year was Larry Mawby, a pioneer in producing award-winning, internationally recognized sparking wine in northern Michigan. Having spent a lifetime connected to the land, Larry’s passion, purpose, and livelihood is directly connected to the topics covered by this reporting desk. In addition to his significant work on the IPR Community Advisory Council, Larry made a three-year leadership commitment to support the Science and Conservation Desk, translating his strong personal connection to this work into a generous gift for our entire community. “Understanding the place we call home is critical if we are to take care of it, to steward it, properly. IPR brings me information about the people, the planet, my neighbors and neighborhood; this is vital to me as I live my life.” — Larry Mawby A NEW HOME FOR JOURNALISTS Barbara Alldredge has championed Interlochen as an integral community connector for decades, recognizing its unique ability to unite people of all ages and backgrounds. Involved with numerous facets of our creative hub via her late husband, Trustee Emeritus William Alldredge, Barbara has always felt a particular connection to Interlochen Public Radio. This year, Barbara made a leadership commitment to support the current and future generation of journalists. Her generous gift will help refurbish a cabin near the radio station to provide much-needed housing for IPR interns or visiting reporters working on Science and Conservation Desk assignments. The Alldredge Cabin will provide a welcoming home for the dedicated journalists whose uncompromising work makes IPR the essential, trusted public service it is.
IPR Leadership Annual Giving
Membership in the Producer’s Circle ($5,000+ annual gift) or Broadcaster’s Circle ($1,000+ annual gift) demonstrates a commitment to safeguard and grow the vital role IPR plays within and beyond our local community. Mindful of the critical role listeners play in supporting IPR, The Green Brick Foundation increased its previous Producer’s Circle giving during the Spring 2020 Drive to challenge fellow listeners to become supporters. The foundation made a $10,000 leadership commitment, agreeing to match the first 100 gifts from new donors with a $100 bonus for IPR. This generous support leveraged by the gifts of many others exemplifies the spirit of public broadcasting—and the broad-based support of our listeners. “The Green Brick Foundation appreciates the vital role IPR plays in providing informative and entertaining programming to this area.” — The Green Brick Foundation
