HARVEST AND HEART Thoughts on the Season of Thanks
“With Thanksgiving here in a few short days, I’ll be thinking of you all as I give thanks for my life’s blessings.”
It’s incredible how much humanity I’ve encountered while at the handle of a lawnmower.
and it’s still humbling to know this couple thought enough of my work to give it to me.
I’ve never viewed my work as just a job; for me, it’s a meaningful way to connect with others. People care deeply about their property, so serving them in a way that makes it beautiful has always been my goal. I’ve always been grateful for the opportunity to earn a living doing something I love, but my greatest joy comes from seeing God and nature work their magic to help me create a work of art that my clients love and appreciate. About 20 years ago, well before I got married and had children, I was a young man trying to make my way in the world by mowing lawns. As I began establishing myself in the area, I received various tips and other tokens of appreciation from satisfied customers. The extra $50 or $100 I’d occasionally receive meant the world to me as a young person just starting out in business, and the kindness shown to me encouraged me to always do my very best for anyone who called on me to provide a service. My early clients included an older couple with a history in aviation. The husband once owned an airline before retiring, while his wife worked for Delta Airlines. I’ve always been fascinated by air travel, so we’d often converse about their experiences. Learning more about a field that interested me was a bonus of working on their lawn.
Fast-forward to today, and it warms my heart to say that the ticket to Hawaii hasn’t been the only
extraordinary gift of gratitude I’ve received. Over the years, my company has been honored to receive food, thank-you notes, and Christmas cards from customers who wanted to express how much our work meant to them. I’ll also never forget seeing a glowing online review of at least 400 words. Many clients have welcomed me into their homes and shared their family stories. Even though my employee base has grown and I’m less hands-on with our work than I used to be, I still feel warmth from our community. I’m honored to have built such strong relationships with so many people over these past 20-plus years, and I never take any of them for granted. With Thanksgiving here in a few short days, I’ll be thinking of you all as I give thanks for my life’s blessings. No matter what circumstances you face, how busy you are, and how troubling certain times in our collective history and culture may feel, we still live in the most blessed country in the world. Sometimes, simply showing someone how much you appreciate them is enough to brighten their day.
One day, the wife presented me with a thank-you gift that shocked and amazed me: a free ticket to Hawaii .
Imagine how brightly our world would shine if we all did that more often.
While few people would ever pass up a chance to spend time in Hawaii, being there meant much more to me than vacationing in a gorgeous place. That’s where my parents are from and where I spent my childhood, so the gift of returning there was a blessing. It was a token of gratitude I’ve never forgotten,

Thankful Thoughts and Timeless Landscapes CULTIVATING GRATITUDE THIS SEASON
As the holidays approach and we gather with family and friends, November naturally invites us to pause and reflect on gratitude. In a world that often feels busy and hurried, slowing down to appreciate what we have (and with whom we share it) brings balance and meaning to our lives. At BLG Environmental Services, we believe landscapes are more than just outdoor spaces; they’re settings where life happens. A beautifully designed yard isn’t just about plants, lighting, or stonework; it’s about creating places where Thanksgiving dinners spill onto the patio, children play in the shade of trees, and conversations with neighbors linger just a little longer by the fire pit. These moments are why we do what we do. Gratitude in landscaping also reminds us to appreciate nature. The vibrant colors of fall, the cooler breezes, and even the slower pace of the season highlight the rhythms of the outdoors. Every tree we plant (and every flower bed we design) becomes part of a bigger story that connects people to the beauty of creation and one another. This time of year also encourages generosity. Just as we count our blessings, we look for ways to share them. Whether hosting friends, giving back to our communities, or supporting local businesses, gratitude naturally turns outward. Our work means going the extra mile to ensure clients feel cared for with high-quality design and installation, honest communication, careful planning, and attention to detail.
CHICKS DIG IT Ella Goes Elven
Hello! It’s Ella, back with another update. I hope everybody reading this is doing well and having fun.
Things with me have been pretty busy lately. I turned 10 not too long ago, and I’ve been studying hard at school. A few issues back, I told you about how I dressed up as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis for a special report I gave in one of my classes. Well, I’ve since decided to go even further into acting! Last summer, I signed up for theater at school! The group I’ve joined will be doing a production of “Elf” (based on the movie of the same name). We rehearse on Sundays from 2–4 p.m., and Daddy drives me there and drops me off. Sometimes, we’ll stop at Starbucks and have some nice one-on- one time. He also had theater experience in school, but he worked behind the scenes and didn’t act on stage. Me? I’m excited to do it!
It’s a big commitment to give up time on the weekend to do theater, but I’m loving it! I’ve made new friends through the school theater, and it’s been so much fun doing something new.
You may be wondering which character in “Elf” I’ll be playing. Well, I’ve decided to be tight-lipped and keep it a surprise … no matter how many times Daddy asks me! He will probably share photos in this newsletter after the big onstage reveal in a few weeks. I can’t wait to be on stage and part of “Elf”! I think it’s important to try new things, and I’m glad I thought of doing theater. Who knows … maybe this will be the start of a big career in stage and screen. But for now, I’m just having fun and learning as much as possible about acting.
Wish me luck out there!

Bundle Up and Step Out
THE CASE FOR A DAILY WALK Less Scrolling, More Strolling As the temperatures dip and daylight starts to
calorie burn of even a casual stroll. That quick burst of movement in the colder air can also boost circulation, improve energy levels, and clear mental fog, especially if you’ve been sitting at a desk for most of the day. Create a cozy routine you look forward to. One of the best ways to stay consistent during these hopefully-cooler months is to make your walk enjoyable. Put on something comfortable, choose a playlist or podcast you love, and set a daily reminder to step outside. Whether it’s 10 minutes around the block or a long weekend loop, consistency matters more than intensity. Make it social, rewarding, or both. If you aren’t feeling motivated solo, ask a friend or neighbor to join you a few times a week. If you prefer going alone, add a small reward: a stop for a warm drink, or the satisfaction of checking it off your daily goals list. These little incentives can make your walk something to look forward to.
dwindle sooner in the evenings, staying active often falls to the bottom of the priority list. It’s easy to settle into the routine of indoor comfort with more screens and less movement. However, carving out time for a daily walk, even in the chillier months, is a simple and effective way to stay physically and mentally sharp. Fall and winter are nature’s underrated workout months. There’s something calming about a sidewalk covered in fall leaves or a peaceful neighborhood with a cool breeze whispering through the trees. The colder seasons offer a refreshing and grounding change of scenery. A short walk outdoors allows you to unplug and take in the subtle beauty that’s easy to miss when you’re rushing from one indoor task to the next. The science of seasonal movement is real. Cooler air does more than wake you up. It makes your body work harder to stay warm, thus increasing the
