Using American Community Survey to Understand Your Community

(left center column) received SNAP, and 88.8 percent did not receive SNAP benefits (right center column) in 2019.

We could further consider the household types between and within groups, their poverty status, disability status, or other indicators available to us. The > symbols allow us to collapse or expand categories that we are (or are not) interested in. In the example shown, we collapsed multiple categories available to further describe the group of households with children under the age of eighteen present to more easily see how the presence of children differs between SNAP-recipient and non-recipient households. We can see that among households that received SNAP, 38.5 percent had children under eighteen, and 61.5 percent did not; conversely, among households that did not receive SNAP, only 22.9 percent included children, and 77.1 percent were households without children. Finally, let’s review two more indicators to better understand how vulnerable SNAP recipient households in Carroll County are, compared to non-recipient households. Using information that the subject table provides about household poverty and disability status; we can see that forty-nine percent of SNAP recipient households lived below the poverty level. In comparison, 11.8 percent of non-recipient households did. Similarly, among SNAP recipient households, 41.6 percent included at least one person with a disability. This percentage was much lower, at 28.3 percent, among households that were not receiving SNAP benefits.
