Using American Community Survey to Understand Your Community

Additional Tools

We hope that this publication has shown you how using data can enhance your work as an Extension professional, giving you a better understanding of what data is available to you, and perhaps helped you engage with data for the first time. Our tutorial only scratched the surface of what is possible. The Census Bureau and other federal statistical agencies, state and local governments, non-profit organizations, and corporations collect vast amounts of data about communities every day. We limited our introduction to only one dataset and highlighted the main features you may find useful. If you enjoyed these case studies and want to learn about other Census Bureau data tools, here are several portals that you may want to explore.

1. Narrative Prof i les

The Narrative Profiles tool uses American Community Survey data to generate a

report describing a selected area’s demographic, social, housing, and

economic conditions. Narrative profiles are available for large areas like the United States and individual states, and for small geographies, including county, place, census tract, ZIP code, and Tribal Area. The tool allows you to search for an area and then generates a webpage with text descriptions, graphs, and tables for all included indicators.
