Margin of Error

Margin of Error A Margin of Error (MOE) is a number associated with each estimated data point provided with a Census estimate. The MOE describes the possible variation of that estimate; it is a

+/- band around an estimate that says that the true value of the estimate in the population will not exceed this interval within a ninety percent confidence interval. For example, if the estimation of the number of men under five years old in the United States is 10,154,024 and the MOE is +/- 3,778, that means that within a ninety percent confidence interval, the true number of men under five years old in the United States is between 10,157,802 on the upper end, and 10,150,246 on the lower end.
