Algebra 2 Companion Book, Volume 2

7.1.2 Inverses of Relations and Functions Key Objectives • Graph and recognize inverses of relations and functions. • Find inverses of functions. Key Terms • An inverse relation is the set of all ordered pairs ( y , x ) from a relation with ordered pairs ( x , y ). The graph of an inverse relation is the reflection of the graph of the relation across the line y = x . • Inverse functions are functions that undo each other and are found by using inverse operations. The input and output values of inverse functions are exchanged. Example 1 Graphing Inverse Relations To graph an inverse relation, reflect each point across the line y = x . This is equivalent to switching the x - and y -values in each ordered pair of the relation.
