Algebra 2 Companion Book, Volume 2

7.1.2 Inverses of Relations and Functions (continued) Example 2 Writing Inverse Functions by Using Inverse Operations Recall that inverse operations are operations that undo each other. For example, multiplication and division are inverse operations, and addition and subtraction are inverse operations. Functions that undo each other are inverse functions. Inverse operations can be used to find the inverse of a function, as demonstrated in this example. The notation f − 1 ( x ) can be used for the inverse of a function f ( x ).

Example 3 Writing Inverses of Multi-Step Functions If a function involves multiple operations, undo those operations in the reverse of the order of operations to find the inverse of the function.
