8.1.4 Rational Functions (continued) Example 5 Graphing Rational Functions with Holes

If the numerator and denominator of a rational function are equal to 0 for a particular x -value, then the function is undefined at this x -value and may have a hole at this x -value, which is an omitted point in the graph. Specifically, if a rational function has the same factor x − b in both the numerator and the denominator, then there is a hole in the graph at the point where x = b , unless the line x = b is a vertical asymptote.
