THE MAGIC OF FOURTH OF JULY HOW WE’RE PLANNING TO CELEBRATE SAFELY MID-PANDEMIC

Small-Group Training Sessions Now Being Held Virtually

Do you have kids? If you do, it probably won’t surprise you that the Fourth of July is a BIG deal in the Penrose house. My three boys turn into little pyromaniacs each year, begging us to stop by every roadside fireworks stand so that they can fill their baskets with firecrackers, smoke bombs, sparklers, and those tiny paper tanks that shoot flames. They love the idea that once a year, they’re allowed to play with fire and make things go BOOM. When I was a kid, fireworks weren’t my No. 1 priority on the Fourth. Instead, it was all about the water. My parents have a lake house in Minnesota, and my favorite thing to do was spend the summer there swimming, tubing, and fishing. When I think of the Fourth of July, I always think of that lake. Setting off fireworks at the end of the dock and barbecuing on the shore were essential summer experiences, and this year, my husband and I are going to try to recreate that picture-perfect image for our boys. Usually, on the Fourth, we let our little pyros set off their fireworks, have a potluck with family and friends, and then head to one of the big fireworks shows here in town. This year, though, the odds of those crowded shows happening seem slim, and even if they do, I’d hesitate to take my family. So instead, we’re planning a trip to my parents’ lakehouse in Minnesota. It’s a remote spot, so we’ll be as isolated as can be! This year’s celebration is going to be on a smaller scale, but we’re still planning to have all of the classics. Our biggest goal is to We have new FREE virtual classes via Webex.com. Enjoying a day on the lake!

have fun and let our kids be kids. We’ll set them loose to play in the lake, then have a big barbecue with the traditional chips, dips, hamburgers, hot dogs, and grilled chicken. Then, we’ll set off fireworks at the end of the dock just like my parents did when I was a little girl. I honestly can’t wait. Of course, fireworks, swimming, and great food aren’t all the Fourth of July is about. It’s also Independence Day, marking the date the 13 American colonies officially split from England. Personally, that history and the freedoms our Founding Fathers fought for have been on my mind a lot since this pandemic started. We don’t have quite as many freedoms as we used to, and I’m looking forward to regaining them as the country recovers. In the meantime, you can find me and my family in Minnesota, celebrating the holiday in nostalgic style. I hope that if your Fourth of July traditions have also been disrupted, you can find a safe alternative way to celebrate that you’re excited about, too!

Wishing you the best,

– Dr. Jennifer Penrose
