Ideas about the American West, both in popular culture and in commonly accepted historical narratives, are often based on a past that never was, and fail to take into account important events that actually occurred. The exhibition Many Wests: Artists Shape an American Idea examines the perspectives of 48 modern and contemporary artists who offer a broader and more inclusive view of this region, which too often has been dominated by romanticized myths and Euro-American historical accounts.

Eunice Jensen Parsons BORN 1916, OREGON ARTIST
Currently 106 years old, artist Eunice Jensen Parsons has enjoyed a remarkable life and career. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1934–35, the Portland Museum Art School from 1950–54, and in 1957 took a bus trip to the East Coast to study abstract expres- sionism. Parsons joined the faculty at the Museum Art School, where she was active from 1958–1979, and was known as a blunt but brilliant teacher. She has worked as a painter, printmaker, tilemaker and collage artist, eventually moving away from painting in the 1970s to focus on collage. Her work is held in the permanent collections of the Portland Art Museum, Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, and many others.
