CUSTOMERS & FRIENDS Welcome to the 2025 edition of the Bred for Balance Sale. While we are always looking toward the future, whether it be the next calf crop or predicting the market, the preparation of this sale book causes some reflection on the past. Those reflections bring forth a lot of memories. It does not seem possible that this will be our 18th production sale. We have certainly been blessed not only by the support of ranchers from all over North America, but more importantly, we’ve been blessed by the relationships we have made. Those relationships and the feedback we receive from each are what keeps us on course with our breeding program. THE GENETICS We take our responsibility as a genetic provider with utmost gravity. The genetics which you place in your program play an outsized role in the future of your business. Not only does today’s successful cow-calf operations depend on making steers that pay, they must make cows that stay. There is much more profit discovered by having the right kind of fertile, maternally-efficient, problem-free cows populating the herd than by simply producing high-selling steers. THE OFFERING In an effort to bring more value to the equation than just another Angus bull, we deliver bulls which are genetically-built with many generations of practical, predictable and proven cattle behind them which excel for what we call ranch-level profitability. Going one step further, we only deliver bulls which are age-advantaged and developed slowly. They will hold up better, will breed more cows and will outlast the competition. And in the event of breeding failure, they are warrantied. THE TEAM The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. From producing purebred Angus seedstock to Quarter Horses and high-quality hay for our own use and for sale, Montana Ranch has a lot of moving parts requiring specialized expertise, dedication and intricate attention to detail. Those who drive each of these parts are integral to the cattle being offered. Following, we recognize those who contribute to the whole of Montana Ranch: • RANDY AND SUSAN HOLMAN run the Quarter Horse program. Simply stated, they are among the best in the business at what they do. • MATT COTTLE and his team of ANDY COTTLE, CURT WADE and COLT THORNESS blend cutting-edge technology and science with good old-fashioned farming smarts to produce the forage to sustain the herd and hay which is in high-demand throughout the West. When not producing world-class cow and horse feed, these professionals keep the equipment in mint condition, provide support for large cattle projects and in the long, hard winters in northwest Montana, keep the hay and bedding delivered to the herd. • MIKE SUTTON is a true jack of all trades. Mike enables everyone to keep focused on the job at hand by providing project support and in keeping all of the facilities maintained and in excellent working order. • DAVID and SANDY SABEY strive to keep us in position to succeed. Their inspiration, leadership and mentorship enable all of us to achieve more, both professionally and personally. Beyond our own team, we are certainly appreciative of our many great friends who always rise to the occasion when we need extra hands or expertise. There is not enough space to list them all here, but we could not run without them. We have made every effort in this book to provide you with very detailed information about each bull in this offering, while videos of each bull may be viewed by following the links on our website. Please do not hesitate to contact me to further discuss any of the bulls or to arrange a viewing of the bulls and their dams. We look forward to having you and your family join us at the ranch in scenic Bigfork for great cattle, great food and great fellowship!

Bred for Balance We blend the best science with good old-fashioned cow sense to create a balanced-trait genetic foundation designed to create more profit, not just increased revenue at the point of sale. This bred-in balance of traits prioritizes fertility, structural soundness, maternal productivity/function/efficiency and moderated-mature size in every animal while striking optimal and predictable levels of growth/performance and carcass merit. Fertility: The number one driver of a ranch’s profitability. Research indicates that fertility is exponentially more influential on profit than any other trait. Intense pressure is placed on the Montana Ranch herd with a strict 3 heat- cycle breeding season. Structural Soundness: Soundness starts from the ground up. Cattle must have the ability to travel and forage to be efficient. It’s no secret, every breed is grappling with an explosion of unsound hooves. Anything less than an sound hoof is unacceptable. Moderated-Mature Size: As cited by Dr. Rick Rasby of Univ. of Nebraska-Lincoln, there is an approximate 10% annual feed savings and a 10% stocking advantage for every 200 lb. decrease of mature weight of cows.

Maternal Productivity/ Function/Efficiency: The term Maternal simply boils down to a cow being able to predictably and consistently wean 50+% of her body weight with little human intervention. Easy-calving cows which get their newborn up and going, which have problem-free udders for their entire life and which are able to breed back and have a calf every 355-375 days are the standard. Growth/Performance: While most producers have selected bulls for increased growth, weaning weights in commercial cow-calf herds have remained static for the last twenty years. At the same time, mature weights have increased dramatically. Expression of these higher growth genetics is limited by available feed resources. Selection for higher growth than the environment can support only results in increased feed costs for the cow herd. By placing simultaneous downward pressure on mature size in combination with optimum levels of weaning and yearling growth, you can make gains in performance while maintaining or decreasing mature size. Carcass: Who doesn’t like a great steak? Marbling is not a dirty word with us if all of the key convenience and fundamental traits are bred in to the cow herd. The pursuit of extremes in carcass traits and the $Beef bio-economic index used by Angus breeders has, however, led to a proliferation of cattle unsuited for many cow-calf operations. With growth, carcass weight and lower fat figuring into the calculation, it’s easy to see how this index can have deleterious effects on making efficient cows

Not all Angus bulls are created equal. Some are the product of intentional and disciplined breeding programs, while others are the product of multipliers. There truly is a difference. The Montana Program By utilizing the best science in combination with good, old- fashioned cow sense and intentionality in building pedigrees, we are able to produce bulls with a bred-in balance of optimum performance and maternal excellence. We are very cow-centric at Montana Ranch and target the relationships between different cow families which affect genetic expression. Having the right genes does not hold much value if those genes are not expressed on the ranch level. Encouraging this genetic expression with the right combinations of prepotent cows and by optimizing management subsequently sets up the resulting progeny with the ability to pass on that genetic expression.

Unlike much of the seedstock industry where the pendulum is constantly swinging with fire and ice/corrective matings, we mate “like to like” for increased consistency and predictability. Imagine seven cows from a three-generation pedigree standing in a corral. Are the cows similar in type? Are they of similar size? Are they similar in their productivity? Are they similar in structural soundness? Are they similar in their maternal abilities and function? If so, they will produce sons which will, in turn, produce progeny very much like those seven cows. Pay particular attention to the cows “stacked” in each of the pedigrees in this book. We think you will see that the cattle are truly Different by Design . If you would like to know more about the Montana Program and our breeding philosophy, just ask us! We are pleased to share it with you!

AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION SELECTION TOOLS Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is a prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait.

Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is a prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait. The factors affecting EPDs are an animal’s ancestors, individual performance within its contemporary group and its genomics. While EPDs assist in removing some of the guesswork, they are merely a guide and are only a predictive tool. PRODUCTION CED (Calving Ease Direct) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births in first-calf heifers, with a higher value indicating greater calving-ease. Breed average is +7. BW (Birth Weight) , expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Breed average is +1.2. WW (Weaning Weight) , expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit pre-weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Breed average is +66. YW (Yearling Weight) , expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit post- weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Breed average is +118. SC (Scotal Circumference) , expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in a sire’s ability to transmit scrotal size compared to that of other sires. Breed average is +.87. MATERNAL HP (Heifer Pregnancy) , is a selection tool to increase the probability of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as heifers during a normal breeding season. Breed average is +11.1. MM (Maternal Milk) is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is the part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk. Breed average is +26 MANAGEMENT DOC (Docility) is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. Breed average is +19.

CLAW SET, is expressed in units of claw-set score. A lower EPD is more favorable, indicating a sire will produce progeny with more symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced toes. Breed average is +.49. FOOT ANGLE , is expressed in units of foot-angle score. A lower EPD is more favorable, indicating a sire will produce progeny with an angle closer to 45 degrees at the pastern and appropriate toe length and heel depth. Breed average is +.48. PAP (Pulmonary arterial pressure) , is expressed in millimeters of Mercury (mmHg), with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire should produce progeny with a lower PAP score. PAP score is an indicator of susceptibility to high altitude disease commonly experienced at elevations greater than 5,500 feet. Selection for this trait aims to improve the genetic potential for a sire’s progeny to have lower PAP scores thus a lower chance of contracting high altitude disease increasing the environmental adaptability of cattle living in mountain areas. Breed average is +1.15. CARCASS MB (Marbling EPD) , expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Breed average is +.61. RE (Ribeye Area EPD), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Breed average is +.63. $VALUE SELECTION INDEXES Selection indexes are a tool to select for several traits simultaneously, while taking into account genetic and economic values. $Values encompass the revenue generated from genetically derived outputs and associated costs from required inputs.

$M (Maternal Weaned Calf Value) , expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny from conception to weaning by decreasing mature cow size and improving docility, foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with current production. Breed average is +61. $C (Combined Value) , expressed in dollars per head, includes $M and $B with the objective that a producer will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with heifers retained, while the producer retains ownership of all remaining male and female progeny though the feedlot and sold on a carcass merit grid. Breed average is +253. Dam’s Production lists the number of calves measured from the dam and their average ratio for the given trait. PERFORMANCE DATA BW: Actual Birth Weight WW: Weaning Weight adjusted to an age- constant of 205 days. YW: Yearling Weight adjusted to an age-constant of 365 days. SC: Scrotal Circumference adjusted to an age- constant of 365 days. IMF: Percent Intramuscular Fat (indicator trait for Marbling) adjusted to an age constant of 365 days. RE: Ribeye Area, measured in sq. cm, adjusted to an age constant of 365 days. Ratio: Ranking within a contemporary group. A ratio of 100 is average for the group, while 105 is 5% above average for the group.

Inheritance:

Why do we place so much emphasis on the cows populating the pedigree? With intentionality, dams which are prepotent and which presumably transmit their mitochondrial DNA more consistently are strategically weaved into each pedigree. Mitochondrial DNA is the site of the cell’s energy production and it is only inherited from the mother. Without Mitochondrial DNA, gene expression is inconsistent and unpredictable. Prepotent: Showing great effectiveness in transmitting hereditary characteristics to its offspring. Prepotent cows tend to produce similar genetic expression in all of her calves regardless of the sire used. What if all 7 cows in a 3-generation pedigree are prepotent and consistent for type, kind, function and productivity? Obviously, the odds of success multiply exponentially.
