Corporate Governance and Disciplinary Committee

Dear Members, With the completion of our club facilities’ upgrading, we managed to collect more revenue through higher facility rentals as well as attract more tenants such as the upcoming Beer Garden and Prawning. The increase in revenue would allow our Club to provide better services and perks for our members. The main responsibility of Corporate Governance and Disciplinary Committee is tosetdirectionandpoliciesoncorporateservices, handle disputes among members and complaints against other members that warrant the attention of the Club. On Corporate Governance, we have recently reviewed and tightened our financial procedures on procurement, maintenance, and lease agreements. Management staff also had regular training sessions to familiarise themselves with the changes. On Disciplinary, I am pleased to inform you that our Committee has not been convened to take action on such cases. Let’s keep up our effort to make our Club a warm and gracious place for our members to interact and relax.

The Law of Averages Jennifer Lee, President, Grassroots Toastmasters Club (Jun 2018 - Jun 2019)

HOWTHE LAWOF AVERAGES SHAPES YOU

Napoleon Hill, advisor to President Franklin Roosevelt wrote in ‘Think and Grow Rich‘ that every night before he slept, he would have an imaginary council meeting with some 5 ‘invisible ghostly counselors’. These included dead people such as Darwin, Einstein, Aristotle, Confucius and Socrates. Through these soulful nightly meetings, he received immense inspiration, knowledge and ideas which he credited for his success in life. Robert Kiyosaki, Financial columnist on Yahoo Finance need not have to speak to the five 5 wise ghosts. He shared in his Rich Dad, Poor Dad book that he had two dads. His real dad, stuck in the middle-class with limiting viewpoints on money, and his rich dad, one of the wealthiest man in Hawaii, was smart about getting money to work for him. By consciously choosing to interface with his rich dad, he acquired the knowhow and mindset of how to become rich, which eventually led him to become successful in life.

You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. – goes a famous quote by Jim Rohn, a millionaire motivational speaker and mentor of famous motivator, Tony Robbins.

It doesn’t matter how smart you are. It doesn’t matter how talented you are or which skills you have.

The people you spend the most time with, make you. You are their average. This relates to the law of averages. The principle holding that, probability will influence all occurrences in the long term. The Chinese has a saying, “ When you are near to the pearl, you will glimmer, When you mixed with ink slab, you become blacker”. THE NUMBERS ARE IN! According to the British Household Panel Survey, the probability of a child smoking is 12% if one parent smokes and 24% if both parents smoke. The American National Association for Alcoholics found that the chance of a child being an alcoholic is 25% if one parent is an alcoholic and 50% if both the parents are alcoholic. You would agree that if you want to lose 10 kg but you are constantly surrounding yourself with peoplewho eats a lot, you will find that it will take a lot to restrain yourself.

6 TYPES OF PEOPLEWHO BUILD YOURMENTAL TOUGHNESS Glenn Llopis, Business Consultant wrote in American Forbes business magazine about how we are surrounded by 6 Types Of People who Build Your Mental Toughness. They are the doubters, the leeches, the critics, the envious, the victims and the noise.

These are the pessimistic skeptics who are waiting at the sidelines salivating to witness your failure. Something like Mr. Bean? The Doubters ?

These are the typical “know-it-alls” who always have a voice in the matter and will disrupt your confidence by telling you that your vision is wrong. Sounds like Mr. Brown? The Critics

The Leeches

Leeches will stay close to your every move just so they can steal your ideas. They are uncreative and unoriginal people.

The Envious

The Victims

The Noise

Envious people make your job more difficult as they attempt to slow down your execution by trying to convince themselves and others that your work isn’t important.

Victims feel that something is owed to them for theirmisfortune. Theywould spend their timemaking you feel sorry for them by asking for favours. They are the manipulators and want others to feel their pain

They serve primarily to create chaos and make other people’s lives miserable.

These people average you down

Heard of the 5 minute rule on why successful people leave their loser friends behind? Writer and social entrepreneur Brenton Weyi says that if someone were to drag him down, he would never spent more than five minutes around them. He looks for people who average him up. Many of us have heard of the heroic life story of Darren Tan, a 34-year old student who graduated from NUS’s Faculty of Law in 2013. Behind his current success was a complicated life of an ex-prisoner, who spent his teenage days taking part in gang-related activities like robbery, fighting, extortion, sniffing glue and even dabbling in an array of drugs. Despite the long period of time in jail which forced all his English language abilities out of him, being in prison put a halt to him loitering the streets and the bad influences. In prison school, he joined the Toastmasters Club and even became the President of the club. Together with a lot of hard work and self-study, he convinced the University’s interviewers to admit him to Law School. Today, he spends his time trying to be the good influence on wayward youths that he was assigned to.

Conclusion Everypersonwillbecomesuccessful because of the great company he or she keeps. Your network of the five key people will determine the way you think, act and approach your life goals. Who you are with can elevateyouasmuchas it canbeyour roadblocks. You are the average of the five people you spent the most time with. So choose carefully who the five persons you wish to spent the most time with. My colleague was telling me that he has not much choice. He has a six month baby, Chinese speaking mother-in-law and an Indonesian maid. He is worried that soon he will not be able to write in English and may pee in his pants. Of course he cannot choose to apply the 5 minute rule, but he can have a nightly meeting with the 5 wise ghosts provided he does not find it too creepy.

His friends who average him down were removed from him when he was in jail. You don’t have to go to prison to join the Toastmasters Club. Grassroots Toastmasters Club will equally average you up. If you want, you can run for President too.

8 Things about

you always wanted to know

Embrace the spirit of the season with this handy guide

Taking place on 5 June this year, Hari Raya Puasa is a time of celebration for Muslims all over the world. The occasion is marked by special prayers, visits to family and friends and trips to Hari Raya bazaars. All Singaporeans are welcome to join in the festivities that come with Hari Raya Puasa, and to make sure you get the full experience, here are eight things you should know about the religious holiday.

What does “Hari Raya Puasa” mean?

Theholiday isknown inSingaporeasHari RayaPuasa or Hari Raya Aidilfitri. “Hari Raya” means “great day” in Malay, referring to its significance at the end of a month of fasting (“puasa” is Malay for “fasting”). In Arabic, the holiday is called Eid al- Fitr, or simply Eid. Hari Raya Puasa is a time to rejoice after a month of abstinence.

What does “Ramadan” mean?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the twelve- month Islamic calendar, and Hari Raya Puasa takes place on the first day of Shawwal (or Syawal), the tenth month. According to Oxford Dictionaries, the word “Ramadan” comes from the Arabic word “ramada” which means “be hot”. Ramadan holds significance as the month in which the Quran was revealed. Why do the dates of Ramadan and Hari Raya Puasa change every year? A lunar calendar, the Islamic calendar consists of 354 or 355 days, meaning that Ramadan begins approximately 11 days earlier than it did in the preceding year according to the Gregorian calendar. As such, Hari Raya Puasa also takes place about 11 days earlier each year.

9

Grassroots with passion

Do all Muslims have to fast during Ramadan?

AllMuslimsareobligedtofastduringthemonthofRamadan, however, some are exempted from it. Among them are children who have not yet reached puberty, the elderly, the ill and infirm, women who are menstruating, expectant and nursing mothers, and those who are travelling. What’s the difference between Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji? As every Singaporean knows, there are two Hari Rayas on our calendars, the other being Hari Raya Haji, sometimes referred to as the Festival of Sacrifice. Known as Eid al-Adha in Arabic, this holiday honours Prophet Ibrahim’s faith in God. When asked by God to sacrifice his son, Ismail, Ibrahim obeyed, showing his faith. God stopped him, however, and provided him with a sheep to sacrifice instead. Korban, the sacrifice of a sheep, goat, cow or camel, is a prominent part of Hari Raya Haji, with meat from the animals being distributed to the poor and needy, family and friends, and the person who performs the Korban. Hari Raya Haji, as its name suggests, is also linked with another pillar of Islam, the pilgrimage to Mecca – known as the Hajj. Hari Raya Haji takes place on the 10th day of the month of Zulhijah, the 12th and last month of the Islamic calendar, and marks the end of the Hajj. Hari Raya Haji will be observed on 11 August this year. Where can I join in the Hari Raya Puasa festivities? Geylang Serai is, of course, the best-known place to celebrate Hari Raya. One day at the Hari Raya bazaar is simply not enough to explore all that it has to offer. From food and drinks – both traditional and modern – to clothing, carpets and home décor, you’ll find it all here, all surrounded by a stunning light-up along the streets surrounding the bazaar. According to the Straits Times, last year’s Geylang Serai bazaar drew 1.86 million visitors. The bazaar will take place from May 3 to June 5 in 2019, with up to 700 stalls awaiting visitors. Other bazaars to check out include the one at Our Tampines Hub. Kampong Glam is also a must-visit during the Hari Raya season, particularly the area around the iconic Sultan Mosque. While you’re in the neighbourhood, it’s also worth stopping by theMalay Heritage Centre to immerse yourself in the culture and history of Singapore’s Malay community.

Why do Muslims fast?

Fasting – abstaining from food and drink between sunrise and sunset – is one of the pillars of Islam, the others being faith, prayer, charity and the pilgrimage to Mecca. Fasting is about discipline and is a means for Muslims to avoid distractions and focus on their relationship with God. Fasting also enables Muslims to reconnect with their families, as they gather each morning for sahur (pre- dawn meal) and each evening for iftar (breaking the fast, commonly referred to as “buka puasa”). The pillar of charity also comes into focus during Ramadan as fasting allows people to empathise with those who are less fortunate than them and understand what it’s like to live a life without many of the things we take for granted. Zakat Fitrah, or tithes which benefit the needy, is also paid during Ramadan, with the amount donated tied to the median price of 2.3kg of rice (the normal rate is currently $5). What else do people avoid when they are fasting? In addition to food and drink, people who are fasting also refrain from smoking and avoid any habits, practices or behaviour that would negate their fast, such as engaging in arguments, gossiping and using vulgar language, for example.
