Harmonson Law Firm - November 2022

A general rule of thumb when operating a motor vehicle is that the driver must have a valid license. Those who drive without a license or with a suspended or revoked license are putting themselves and others on the road at risk. But, unfortunately, some people still break the law and drive without a proper license. Why do people drive without licenses? Most people who choose to drive without a license fall into the following categories: • Teenagers who haven’t obtained a license or those below the minimum age requirements to apply for a driver’s license • Seniors who may have failed a driving test due to age-related conditions such as visual or cognitive impairment • Individuals who had their licenses revoked due to medical conditions like seizures or because of careless or reckless driving (e.g., DUIs) An individual can have different types of licenses, and their specific rules allow us to use them when an unlicensed person negligently causes an accident. Types of Licenses Class C is the most common type of license and is typically needed when a person is driving a personal car or truck. If you’re driving a “normal” vehicle, you probably have a Class C license! The Class C license holder is allowed to drive: • A vehicle or combination of vehicles (like a truck and travel trailer) • A single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of less than 26,001 pounds towing a trailer not to exceed 10,000 pounds, and GVWR or a farm trailer with a GVWR that does not exceed 20,000 pounds The Class M license allows a driver to operate a motorcycle or moped. A person must pass a motorcycle operator training course approved by the Department of Public Safety (DPS). GETTING IN AN ACCIDENT WITH AN UNLICENSED DRIVER HOW A CAR ACCIDENT ATTORNEY CAN HELP YOU!

DWAYS THAT SS TOGETHER AY OF REMEMBRANCE

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a division of the Department of Transportation, estimated 42,915 deaths in motor vehicle crashes in 2021, a 10.5% increase from the 38,824 fatalities in 2020. These deaths include pedestrians, cyclists, and others who may have been in the vehicles. Last year was one of the most deadly years for New Mexico roadways. There were 470 traffic fatalities — the highest in the previous decade — a significant increase from the 425 deaths in 2019. Speeding, aggressive driving, and distracted driving cause most of these traffic accidents. It is not only up to the government to help improve these statistics; the solution is also dependent upon us. By following and obeying traffic laws and eliminating distractions, we can address this problem and potentially save the lives of many. Here at Harmonson Law, we want to thank those who serve others and pay tribute to the individuals who lost their lives or were seriously injured due to traffic incidents.
