IV. Jesus Stands Civil Trial —18-28-19:16 A. The reason for the civil trial — Rome had taken from the Jews the right of capital punishment—W . 31- 32. 1) Christ is brought to Pilate— V. 28 2) Pilate demands a f o r ma l charge—W . 29-30 3) Pilate dodges responsibility— W . 31-32 4) Pilate examines Christ—W . 33-37 5) Pilate affirms Christ’s inno cence—V. 38 6) Pilate fails—V. 39 "How Shall We Escape?" A burglar alarm was installed in the box office of a local theatre. A daring gunman rushed up, held a pistol on the cashier and demanded all of the cash. Immediately the cashier pressed her foot on the alarm pedal which touched off a direct alarm to Police Headquarters. A second later the telephone by the cashier rang and the gunman answered it and heard an annoyed voice saying, “Miss, will you kindly take your foot off the pedal, this alarm is driving us crazy.” And do you know, this is the same way the world receives the message of salvation. It does not like to be annoyed with a call to repentance. But whether we like the sound or not, the warning is still there for the Bible says “. . . flee from the wrath to come.” “. . . Behold now is the accepted time, behold now is the day of salvation” 11 Cor. 6:2. Taking one’s foot off the pedal and overlooking the sin ful, desperate condition of man’s heart, does not lessen the danger, for “how shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation.” * * * "The most untamable thing in the entire world hat its dan just behind the teeth."

suffering He must fully drink, for His kingdom is not of this world. III. Jesus Stands Ecclesiastical Trial— W 12-27 A. Before Annas—W 12-14 Henry, “Why did they bind Christ? Because Judas wanted Him held fast (Matthew 26:48); because they would heap shame on Him; because they felt He needed to die. But there is another reason, a typical one. All that hap pened to Him was to fulfill prophecies and we see it on the pages of the Old Testament. The first type was Isaac and before he could be sacrificed, he had to be bound (Gen. 22:9). So it was with the animals offered — Psalm 118: 27.” 1) John alone tells us of Christ being brought before Annas. The fact that there were two High Priests shows the confusion in Israel. Edersheim, “Much has been written on the ‘why’ of two priests in that day. In view of John 11:49, it seems that the Romans elected a high priest for Israel each year (Acts 4:6 mentions 4 who had filled the of fice), but in the light of Luke 3:1, it is clear that sometimes they were re-elected. According to God’s law the High Priest retained his office till death (Exodus 40:15; Numbers 35:25), threfore in the eyes of the Jews, Annas and not Caiphas was the real High Priest. Caiphas was formerly acknowledged in a civil way, but Annas was the ecclesiasti cal head. This, we believe, is why Jesus was taken to Annas first.” 2) Peter denies Jesus—W 15-18. Dr. Norman Harrison called W 15-18 the “Trial of Peter.” B. Before Caiphas—W . 19-24. 1) Jesus appeal to His Ministry —W . 19-21. 2) The first indignity—V. 22. The margin has it “rod.” This ful fills Micah 5:1. 3) Here again Peter is on trial— W . 25-27. John 13:38; Matthew 26:69-75.
