This Was the Worst Thanksgiving EVER
OR WAS IT?
Years ago, Gina and I got the bright idea to haul our three kids, two dogs, a turkey, and all of its fixings up from Marion to our lake house for Thanksgiving. The lake house is about 4 1/2 hours away, so this was QUITE an adventure. I still remember looking in the rearview mirror and seeing the kids squished between the roasting pan, their suitcases, and an enormous cooler. Someone even brought a soccer ball.
By the time Thanksgiving rolled around, the kids were already bored out of their minds. Of course, they started screwing around in the living room, kicking that soccer ball back and forth. I popped my head in to check on them, then headed to the basement to grab a few things we’d need to make dinner. I was just reaching for the first box when — CRASH! The lake house fell dead silent. It was the kind of silence parents never hear unless something goes wrong. Sure enough, when I raced back upstairs, I found the kids arguing next to a pile of broken glass. There was a soccer ball-sized hole in one of our windows!
them up over the hole. A few minutes later, we had a makeshift pizza box window!
This could have kickstarted the worst Thanksgiving ever — but somehow, it didn’t. We had a lovely meal and watched football together on TV. I had to reach over every few minutes and retape the pizza boxes covering the window. They were so greasy that the tape wouldn’t stick! Pretty soon, Gina and the kids were cracking up at my attempts. By the time we piled back into the car on Sunday, we were laughing about the whole incident. The chaos and broken window didn’t really matter in the end. What mattered was that we made great memories and had a lot of fun despite the “inconvenient” circumstances. Looking back, that was one of our best Thanksgivings ever. I’m grateful to have the kind of family that can stick together and laugh at our mistakes. (Of course, if a soccer ball went through the window of one of my rental properties, I wouldn’t have thought it was so funny!)
We didn’t know it yet, but this was about to be the best/worst Thanksgiving ever.
The town was eerily quiet when we got close to the lake house on Wednesday afternoon. Almost
everything was closed for the holidays. Somehow, we hadn’t factored that in! The kids were starving, so we picked up a pizza from one of the only places still open: a nearby convenience store called Casey’s. After we scarfed down the pizza, a realization hit. Since everything was closed and the weather
“You guys have to settle down and watch what you’re doing!” I told them, “We can’t have you damaging everything while we’re here.” Nobody would fess up to the kick that did it. I knew it would be days before we could get a repair person
The lake house fell dead silent. It was the kind of silence parents never hear unless something goes wrong.
I hope your Thanksgiving is as great as that one — without the property damage, of course.
Happy Turkey Day!
was terrible, the five of us would be stuck together in the little lake house all weekend long. Our kids were 8, 12, and 15 at the time, so as you can imagine, this didn’t go over well.
out to the lake house, and cold air was rushing in through the window. I had to do SOMETHING, so I dug through our recycle bin, pulled out the pizza boxes from last night, took them apart, and taped

3 QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER Thinking About Downsizing?
3. WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH ALL OF YOUR STUFF?
Whether you’ve become an empty nester or are about to retire, you may decide to downsize your home. But before doing this, there are many factors you must consider. Here are three questions you should ask yourself before downsizing.
Depending on where you decide to move — a condo, apartment, or a smaller house — you will likely need to part ways with some things. You want to consider how much space you’ll have in your new home and what items will follow you on your next journey. Getting rid of some of your belongings can be difficult, so ensure that you’re prepared to leave some things behind. Consider donating some of your items to shelters and centers. Although your items may not be used by you, they can go to someone in need. The most important question you can ask yourself is if you’re truly ready to downsize. The questions here will help you determine if downsizing is the right choice for you during this time. But don’t feel rushed to decide if you need to make life changes now. Take your time with this decision — you have more free time now than ever.
1. HOW DO YOU WANT TO LIVE?
To find out where you want to live, you must first ask yourself what you want to do. A great place to start is by determining what you want to do with your free time. Do you want to spend time in nature, go on frequent getaways, or be involved in your community? Once you know how you want to spend your time, you can begin looking for places that best suit your needs. 2. WHAT WILL BE THE FINANCIAL BENEFITS OF DOWNSIZING? Before purchasing a new home, you want to see if there are benefits to moving and downsizing. Depending on what the market looks like, the worth of your
home and land, and where you choose to move next, you can take the money you earn from your current home and use it for something else. For example, it can be used as a down payment for your new home, get stashed in a savings or retirement account, or go toward your dream vacation.
YOU SHOULD FIND ONE TODAY! Who Is Your Mentor?
I would not be where I am today without the mentors who are in my life. I’m at my most successful when I strategically surround myself with people who are plain better than me. That’s right — better.
wasn’t the fastest way to meet my goals and make the financial progress I really wanted.
Then came mentors. I invested time (and in many cases money) with them, and I got results.
Today I have ownership in over $70 million of apartments and commercial properties, and this is in Iowa of all places. Not Los Angeles. Not Houston or Dallas. Iowa. I target large projects with hundreds of units at a time if I can get them. The people I hung around with and learned from made me better and helped me achieve my real estate ownership, career, and investment goals. I recommend looking for someone who knows something you don’t. You have to find them — yesterday! The best investment year of your life depends on it. If you are serious about finding a mentor, visit DarinGarman.com, check out the tracks of mentorship, and select “Inner Circle Coaching” at the top of the page. Do this today: If you want to get to the next level, then NOW is the time to find your mentor, NOT after Jan. 1! This year is almost over and what have you accomplished? Here’s a question: Who are you hanging out with now who is BETTER THAN YOU? Do you have someone like this in your life or in your business? If you don’t, the road to success will be longer, tougher, and probably filled with more costly and time-sucking mistakes. For many years, I tried to do everything on my own. I made progress, sure, but it was WAY TOO SLOW. Things really sped up for me when I started spending more time with people who were better than me at the real estate game. Soon, I owned larger, more profitable properties, and I put my investments on THE FAST TRACK by investing in apartment buildings.
I went from trying to buy two- to four-unit properties to “partnering” with someone on a six-unit property. That wasn’t anything to criticize, but it also

Iowa is such a patriotic place that every day feels like Veterans Day. Locals celebrate our troops year-round by visiting the 99 “Freedom Rocks” throughout the state. Each rock displays a patriotic, quintessentially American scene — and Iowa legislator Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II painted every single one. Sorensen’s quest started way back in 1999. That year, the movie “Saving Private Ryan” inspired him to take a brush to a 60-ton boulder on the side of Highway 25 near the town of Menlo, Iowa. He painted the iconic photo of American soldiers raising the flag during the battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. Above the mural, he wrote, “Thank You Veterans For Our Freedom.” The art piece was a hit! Locals loved it so much that Sorensen returned to the site the following year and painted a new mural on top of the old one. He’s done it every year since 1999. The process typically takes about three weeks and happens around Memorial Day. Most of Sorensen’s murals feature the American flag, but soldiers, helicopters, medals, quotes, and the Statue of Liberty also show up regularly. You can check out photos of the murals at TheFreedomRock.com. Eventually, Sorensen realized one rock wasn’t enough for him. He wanted to spread the message of patriotism all over the state. So, he made it his mission to paint a rock in each of Iowa’s 99 counties. It took him 10 years, but he did it! Today, locals and visitors can take the Freedom Rock Tour and road trip from rock to rock.

Add More Life to Your Work-Life Balance
WITH THESE 3 TIPS
ESTABLISH A WORKSPACE. Our environment can play a large role in how we feel each day. If you haven’t established a workspace in your home, you might struggle to separate work from home life. Think about it; if you work from your living room, you will probably find it more difficult to relax there later in the evening. You don’t have to turn an entire room into an office, but dedicating a corner as your workspace will come with benefits. WEAR WORK ATTIRE. What we wear has an effect on how we feel. If you’re wearing sweatpants while you work, it can be difficult to unwind when you’re off the clock and wearing the same clothes. Switch it up and wear professional attire while you’re working. When the workday comes to a close, you can shed your work clothes for something comfier, which will help you relax and focus on what’s going on at home.
for some remote workers, it doesn’t apply to everyone. Certain individuals will even be drawn back into work at home when they’re supposed to be spending time with their family or doing hobbies they enjoy. In fact, when remote workers don’t unplug from their work, they are much more likely to burn out. If you or your employees are currently working remotely, it’s important to establish a proper work-life balance. Here are three ways to include more personal time in your daily routine. SET BOUNDARIES. After you clock out for the day, it can be easy to get dragged back in if you get a text or email relating to your job. That’s why it’s important to set boundaries for yourself. Once you reach a certain time in the day, turn off your work phone or email. Set an alarm for yourself for a time when your work day comes to a close — and put everything away so you can focus on your home life.
One of the biggest concerns employers have with remote work revolves around employees finding distractions at home that will take their attention away from job duties. While this is certainly true
