LESSONS FROM MY FAVORITE CHILDHOOD TV SHOWS

AND HOW THEY HELP ME STAY CHILDLIKE

The rule was this: I had to finish my homework and chores before turning on the TV. As soon as I was done (maybe even sometimes before), I raced to the family room and sat down, ready to watch. When I was growing up, we didn’t have cable, so we used the VCR a lot, which didn’t bother me a bit. My wife says she grew up this way, too. We both had PBS since it was, and still is, free-to- air. This meant we were able to watch “Sesame Street.” As one of the longest-running TV shows in history, and a staple of my childhood, I see why it has its own special day this month. Nov. 10 honors “Sesame Street,” and looking back on this day, I realize the shows I watched as a kid taught me a lot. Aside from “Sesame Street,” I watched “Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers” or “DuckTales” for much of my TV time. I enjoyed these shows because the characters usually worked together to solve a problem, and they weren’t perfect in doing so, either. They fought often but made up just as much as they argued. More than that, they made mistakes while still trying to help others. And by the end of each episode, they set their blunders straight.

In my journey, I have discovered the importance of being childlike, even as a grown-up. I don’t mean being silly or misbehaving but, instead, approaching things with open curiosity and not viewing my mistakes as failures. This is something Jesus says, too. He tells us we are to listen and learn as a child. There is something fundamental about a childlike perspective that requires humility and curiosity. It can be challenging to do things children seem to accomplish effortlessly, like saying sorry when they hurt other people’s feelings, especially those closest to them. But episode after episode, these children’s programs show characters fighting and making up by the end. The lessons are timeless, and we can use them for the rest of our lives. Children’s television also shows us how challenging ourselves can lead to extraordinary things. For instance, in “DuckTales,” Scrooge and his nephews probably don’t want to fight off an ancient Egyptian cult to save Donald from being possessed. Still, they know they have to face the challenge. By the end of the episode, Donald is safe, and Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Scrooge have worked together to overcome an obstacle. No one said it was easy, but pushing themselves allowed them to succeed.

The same is true for us in our own stories. When faced with a challenge, pushing ourselves instead of running away leads to our success and happy endings. You don’t have to do it alone; Scrooge and his nephews didn’t. Ask for help if you need to, as long as you keep moving toward your goal. My kids now mostly watch things like “PAW Patrol,” “The Berenstain Bears,” or “Mickey and the Roadster Racers,” but the lessons are the same. The characters still work hard to solve a problem, sometimes fight, and always make up. I know this because, occasionally, I watch them, too. This Sesame Street Day, my advice is to relax, slow your roll, take a step back from your crazy life, and return to the simplicity of being a child. You’ll be amazed at how different the world looks.

While these stories are meant for children’s entertainment, adults can still learn much from them.

WE MAKE YOUR OUTDOOR AREAS BEAUTIFUL

Floridians know how much the sun can take a toll on our bodies — and our banks. As temperatures rise and we seek cooler places to hide, our air conditioning units must work overtime to fight off the heat. This can be especially problematic if the sun beats down on one particular side of your house. The sun’s constant rays will cause windows and walls to become super-heated, ultimately forcing your AC to work harder.

THE POWER OF SHADE How Planting a Tree Can Help You Save on Your Energy Bill

Luckily, we have a way to stop the harsh sun from ever reaching your house. You can reduce your AC costs majorly by planting trees to create an energy-saving landscape!

Planting trees around your house can help you save money year-round. Trees near your home eliminate super-heated walls

and windows by providing shade and cooling the air around them. In the winter, these trees will help protect you from whipping winds and reduce the energy needed to heat your house.

A LESSON IN RELAXATION TEDDY’S PAW-SPECTIVE

Now, I like a new friend as much as the next dog, but my whole family loves Venus, and she gets all the attention. She was everywhere I looked!

The next day, Dad came down the stairs and put his headphones on, and we started our walk. I will be

Greetings, newsletter friends! It’s me, Teddy! I’m here to inform you that I’ve been working on my chill lately.

honest; I wasn’t feeling very Zen. The grass seemed boring, and the lizards looked less tasty, er, I mean relaxing.

You see, I’ve been building my relaxation skills on walks with my dad. He puts on his headphones and plays classical music, while I like to become one with nature. Sometimes rolling in the grass makes me feel connected to Mother Earth. Putting a lizard in my mouth helps too, but my dad doesn’t really like that strategy.

I looked back at Dad, ready to call in our chill time early, when I noticed he actually did look relaxed. I realized he had been letting me lead the way and enjoyed following along on our walk. Now Venus couldn’t do that! The world perked up again, I gave the grass a good roll, and my chill was restored! I learned that there are things I can do that Venus can’t, like lead a relaxation walk (I’m a master in chill, after all). When I looked at it that way, I decided the chill thing would be to give Venus a chance. It turns out Venus is actually pretty cool. She likes to stay up all night and exercise on her wheel, so sometimes, we’ll hang out into the wee hours of the morning. We even share the couch when it’s TV time.

Needless to say, I was starting to feel really relaxed. Zen was all around me! Until she showed up … Venus.

My chill was tested the day Ella brought a cage into the living room. She set it down, and my heart raced as I peered inside. There she was, a little black ball of fur. A hamster is what the kids call her.

So folks, learn from me, the master in relaxation: Take things as they come and figure out what only you can do. Oh, and maybe try putting a lizard in your mouth too.

OUR CLIENTS SAY IT BEST!

When it comes to choosing the perfect planting location, it’s a good idea to step outside and decide which wall gets the most sunlight. Pay close attention to the west- and east-facing walls since these directions typically receive 50% more direct sunlight than the north and south. The walls that absorb the most heat are the perfect spots to plant your energy-saving trees so they can help block the sun’s intense rays. While you’re outside, consider the other spots in your yard that could use a little extra shade. Maybe you have an outdoor table that just gets too hot to use in the summer, or perhaps some chairs you want to keep cool when it’s time to lounge. These are great locations to plant a tree, and adding some shade to your scorching yard can make it an excellent place for you and your guests to gather without worrying about the heat. An energy-saving landscape is also beautiful. Our favorite trees to grow are live oak, red maple, and crape myrtles because these species have broad crowns, perfect for creating abundant shade. They also contain vibrant colors and flowers that make your yard stand out. Let me help you save on costs by designing and planting your new energy-saving landscape. Schedule a consultation today so I can help you get the most savings, and shade, this year!

America’s 5 Best Ski Resorts

Temperatures are dropping and snow is falling in some parts of the country, so it’s time for some winter fun! Whether you ski, snowboard, or just enjoy the snow, here are some of the best ski resorts to check out this ski season! Steamboat Springs, Colorado A little less glitzy than some of the other popular ski resorts and towns in Colorado, Steamboat Springs is extremely family-friendly with a Western vibe. Because Steamboat is tucked away in the northwest corner of Colorado, the area catches snow from both Utah and Wyoming, which means you can expect some of the best skiing powder. Whitefish Mountain Resort, Montana While Whitefish Mountain Resort was originally a sleepy, quiet, and remote ski resort, it has gained popularity over the past few years, but it still remains an under-the-radar ski destination with friendly locals and smaller crowds. For beautiful, lush Montana views and no ski lift lines, Whitefish is a must! EXPERIENCE FRESH POWDER AND GREAT VIEWS TOP 5 SKI RESORTS TO CROSS OFF YOUR BUCKET LIST

Mad River Glen, Vermont For an authentic, deep-mountain experience, Mad River Glen is considered the best skiing mountain in the East. One of the best features of the resort is that it has single-chair chairlifts — and no snowboarders! The runs are long and the sights are gorgeous while providing an amazing ski run, throwback style! Aspen, Colorado Aspen just had to make this list! This incredibly popular ski resort has four different mountains, providing a wide range of terrains for all different skill levels. The ski resort town is fun, developed, and exciting as well. Deer Valley Resort, Utah A ski-only resort, Deer Valley is a quaint ski town with legendary customer service and unbelievable Utah powder. It should be noted that the chairlifts are speedy and efficient, and the trails are well-groomed. Lift lines are nonexistent, making for an exclusive and remote experience!
