WHO’S THIS

Dawn of a New Era A 2022 national coach of the year enters her first year with the WVU women’s basketball team.

NCAA Tournament Berths Eight, the first in 2002–03 and most recently in 2021–22

arguably the best season yet of her career, Plitzuweit became a Morgantown resident, wearing the Old Gold & Blue. “West Virginia women’s basketball is a job that is known nationally,” she says. “Seeing the commitment of the athletic department and the fan base made it seem like a tremendous opportunity.” Playing college ball at Michigan Tech in the ’90s, Plitzuweit was an immediate stand- out, starting all 29 games as a freshman during the 1990–91 season. She has shone as a coach, too. In her six seasons at South Dakota, she amassed a 158–36 record,

including an 83–10 mark in the Summit League; she was Summit League Coach of the Year three times. Plitzuweit’s career record of 346–129 (.728) encompasses four winning seasons and nine 20-win seasons—including two 30-win campaigns. She has reached the post-season in 14 of her 15 seasons as a head coach. And in 2022, she was named Kay Yow National Coach of the Year, a recognition of great character both on- and off-court. “Dawn is a proven winner everywhere she has been, and her track record for sustained success is impressive,” said Lyons on announcing the hire.

➼ IN JUST A FEW SHORT WEEKS last spring, women’s basketball coach Dawn Plitzuweit moved mountains—on the hardwood and in her life. On March 20, she led the South Dakota Coyotes to a stunning win over No. 2–seeded Baylor to advance to the first NCAA Sweet 16 in program history. And less than a week later, on March 31, West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons tapped Plitzuweit to replace longtime Coach Mike Carey and become the sixth women’s basketball coach in the school’s history. By April 4, just two weeks after coaching

On defense, we’re focused on limiting our opponent’s shot and being tough at all times. On offense, we are going to push the ball up the court and play fast. It’s going to be an exciting team.” WVU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COACH DAWN PLITZUWEIT

The Social Side of the Game Part of the WVU women’s basketball team’s infectious personality involves the ubiquitous presence of social media combined with recent NCAA changes that allow for student athletes to be compensated financially for name, image, and likeness contracts and endorsements. All of the players have Instagram accounts, and some have signed NIL deals to promote themselves regionally and nationally. “In our day and age, it is important for student athletes to know themselves—to learn about their brand, grow their brand, and share their brand,” says Plitzuweit, who has her own IG account where she posts regularly—and privately—for her 900-plus followers. The WVU Women’s Basketball official Facebook page is especially active, with recent posts including a Mean Girls – inspired parody involving the team, humorous Pictionary sketches, and scenes from the team’s September 29 first official practice.

Plitzuweit signed to a five-year contract in March worth $3 million, not including incentives, starting with a base salary of $550,000 for the 2022–23 season. Then she got to work with her new players. “This team has an incredible personality. They are fun. They are hungry,” she says. “I am seeing a lot of individual player growth.” The university’s rabid athletic fan base has embraced the change. “I’m really intrigued to see how the women’s team evolves this upcoming season with Coach Dawn,” says Eva Smith, a civil engineering major at WVU. “I really hope that this change will draw much needed attention, funding, broadcasting, coverage, and pride to this team of amazing women." The opportunity for the coach and team extends beyond the court, students believe. “Sports are everywhere on this campus, but

you don’t see much love for them outside of men's football and basketball,” says Connor Gibbons, a WVU journalism major and avid basketball fan who hopes Plitzuweit's arrival will shift some focus to another exciting and deserving team. Coach Dawn, who turned 50 this Halloween, brings strong experience to Morgantown and a lot of great coaching years to come. She and her husband, Jay, have a son, A.J., who plays basketball for South Dakota and was All-Summit League First Teamer in 2020–21. Their daughter, Lexi, plays basketball for Grand Valley State in Michigan. The whole family has quickly developed an affection for the city on the banks of the Monongahela. “It’s such a great feeling that our kids already call it home,” Plitzuweit says. written by david gignilliat

And about a year after she closed Jamaican Spice, Munye stumbled across a “for rent” sign on Beechurst Avenue and instantly fell in love with the space. “When I called, they told me they’d just put that sign up—same day,” she says. “So, I felt like the place found me more than I found the place.” Munye opened Jamaican Spice WV in August of 2022. “It’s an entirely new entity,” she says, with all-new equipment, a growing menu, and a new business name that emphasizes her dedication to bringing traditional Jamaican flavors to the Mountain State. The menu offers the jerk chicken you’d expect if you’re familiar with Jamaican cuisine as well as sweet chicken for those who don’t like spice, curried goat, and traditional yellow-hued meat pies, or “patties,” colored by turmeric. And there’s also that heavenly oxtail—a heap of tender stewed meat and gravy served atop a healthy scoop of “rice and peas”—what we non-Jamaicans know as beans and rice. Butter beans are there in the mix, with cooked cabbage and delicious fried plantains. Originally from Jamaica, Munye has been cooking since she was a child, and she credits her skills largely to her grandmother. She decided a few years ago to share her talents with her community here in Morgantown. In 2019, Munye established Jamaican Spice, a family-owned and -operated restaurant on Green Bag Road serving authentic Jamaican fare. It was a huge hit, with popular dishes like the oxtail stew typically selling out by early afternoon. Unfortunately for her many loyal customers, changes in Munye’s family dynamic during the COVID-19 pandemic led her to close the restaurant—but this wouldn’t be the end of her story. “I wanted to reopen, because the community gave me so much support every day A Taste of Jamaica Jamaican Spice WV brings authentic Caribbean flavor to Morgantown—again.

Classics with a Modern Twist Von Blaze has made the former Wall Street home of Maxwell’s a destination.

22 MORGANTOWN WINTER 2022

L ocated in the heart of downtown Morgantown, Von Blaze is anything but down-home. Sure, it’s family-owned, with husband–wife team Chris McDonald and April Passaro leading a brigade of talented cooks and servers. Yes, its recipes are made-from-scratch creations that sizzle the taste buds and excite the senses. But the restaurant is unmistakably modern—an oh-so- trendy spot offering elevated eats in casually upscale surroundings. And these aren’t your grandmother’s recipes. The classic sandwiches, soups, and salads here are presented with a twist.

classic sandwich as inspiration and making it our own.” McDonald does that by making his own lobster and shrimp sausages, then adding toppings like Napa slaw, house-made potato chips, and a healthy squirt of brown butter mayo. Just as those toppings add a triumphant finish to Von Blaze’s lobster dog, so do the restaurant’s current successes cap off quite a journey— from a startup food truck to a bustling spot offering some of the city’s hottest tables. A 25-year veteran on the Morgantown restaurant scene, McDonald dreamed of opening his own place since he started his first real cooking job at Morgantown’s longtime Glasshouse Grille back in 1999. After honing his skills there and in North Carolina, he returned to Morgantown so he and Passaro—a Fairmont native with years of hospitality experience— could finally make his dreams come true. Their quest started in the summer of 2021, when they rolled out the Von Blaze food truck and it became a hit on the local food scene. That initial taste of success got them hooked, so they set out to find a permanent space Von Blaze could call home. They found that in the Wall Street location downtown that formerly housed the beloved Maxwell’s, putting in lots of work to create the place you see today. “We wanted to open a place that was comfortable and welcoming,” McDonald says, “with food for everyone made to the best of our ability.” That, they did. written by steven keith

We’re talking treats like hand-cut fries topped with braised short rib poutine and bordelaise sauce and a smoked and seared house-made country bologna sandwich stuffed with nacho chips, cheese, whole-grain honey mustard, and garlic mayo. “When April and I started Von Blaze, we wanted to create menu items that would be accessible to a wide range of customers— taking some classic sandwiches and putting our touches on them,” McDonald explains. One of those is a sloppy joe made of tempeh and chickpeas that you’d never guess was a meat-free meal. “We wanted to take a classic carnivore-esque sandwich and make it vegan,” McDonald says. “The sloppy joe is what we landed on, but the sauce can be used for any ground meats, beef, turkey, or anything. We use it often with ground bacon we smoke in- house for one of our burger specials.” McDonald says some of his personal favorites on the menu are the Pot Liquor Pork Sandwich with smoked pork and collard greens and also the Drummies. Wait, what? Drummies? These Frenched and crispy-fried chicken drumsticks—tossed in sauces like Buffalo, Garlic Parm, Old Bay Buttermilk Ranch, or sweet-salty-spicy Japanese Tabasaki with Kimchi furikake and chives—are sure to become your new obsession. And then there’s the Lobster Dog. Yes, you heard that right. “It’s our change-up of a New England lobster roll, and I think it really embodies what we try to do here—taking a

Hoot and Howl’s

Stephanie Swaim on a great time shopping for gifts in the heart of Morgantown.

Stephanie Swaim left the corporate world in 2018 to open Hoot and Howl artisan shop downtown as an outlet for herself and other great makers. Today, the

shop represents nearly 200 local, West Virginia, American, and small business craftspeople, with a smattering of vintage pieces and a growing plant collection. What do you love about downtown? It’s an eclectic mix of stores, restaurants, and people. This fall, it was truly lovely to see the ginkgo trees turning gold—with all the stores and the brick everywhere, it gives you that nostalgic small-town feel. In winter they do the big snowflakes on the light posts, and all the retail shops decorate their windows with lights and fancy things—it’s really pretty. Where do you like to shop downtown? For casual clothes, River Fair Trade . Shannon there has excellent dresses, and her shawls and scarves are phenomenal. For something more upscale, or for a holiday party, Coni & Franc is a beautiful women’s clothing store. Pathfinder has such good outdoor cold-weather gear. I love the handmade jewelry created by the artisans at Silver Pennies —plus you can create your own from a huge selection of stones and charms and chains. And to buy a good leather accessory for somebody—a briefcase, a purse, a fanny pack—I go to Tanner’s Alley . That’s a lifetime product because, if anything were to go wrong with it, Charlie will take care of it. It’s good for men’s gifts, too, like belts and wallets. What about other kinds of gifts? Definitely Appalachian Gallery . Penelyn has all this amazing West Virginia–made work, and she’s also been carrying vintage glass—a lot of mid-century-style pieces, beautiful stuff. Old Stone House has a lot of collectibles and cute stationery pieces and, for the holidays, they completely reset the store and it’s filled to the brim with treasures—all the fun holiday decor and gifts. And there’s also Bear Wood . They make everything in-house at their wood shop in Hurricane from reclaimed West Virginia wood and bourbon barrels. You can get furnishings; you can get a small magnet. Everything in the shop is so nice. Where do you like to eat? Both coffee shops— Blue Moose Cafe and The Grind —are

Whether it’s for herself or a friend, Kelley Wood finds fashion fun. Here are some of her favorite Morgantown spots.

“My best friend Steph, her mom raised us. She shopped at Schwabe May in Charleston, and she always looked like a million bucks, even on a Saturday morning,” says Kelley Wood. “I got my love of fashion from her.” A sales associate for Morgantown magazine, Wood enlivens our office with her expressive styles. Her everyday flair ranges from hippie to boho chic, and she rocks a professional look when the occasion calls for it. “I like to take chances, too—my friend gifted me one of her furs, and I wore it to work for fun.” Like most of us, Wood, as a mom, has a budget, so her shopping habits are realistic, with the occasional splurge—but she also loves giving fashion as gifts. I love Uptown Cheapskate . They have lightly worn second-hand pieces that are always still in fashion. They have a good variety of styles plus a lot of purses and shoes and accessories, and they have some new things, too. T.J. Maxx is great for discounted higher-end brands. And I’m a sucker for Gabe’s as a one-stop budget shop for everyday clothes for the whole family. What shops do you like for stylish professional clothes? Park & Madison is on the higher end, a classier boho chic kind of feel, and Loft is like a pulled-together, eclectic-meets-classy type of look that I love. What about accessories and jewelry? Along with other great clothes, River Fair Trade has so many interesting scarves, and you can find fun and beautiful jewelry at Silver Pennies and Hoot and Howl . Where are your favorite spots for clothes shopping in Morgantown?

lavish bridal & prom boutique

Where would you tell a friend to shop in Morgantown for a special event?

The dresses and accessories at Coni & Franc are just beautiful, and they have so many options right there in the store and on-site tailoring if you need it. I also like Lavish Bridal & Prom Boutique at Suncrest Towne Centre. For a special keepsake gift, Jacqueline’s Fine Jewelry . Anywhere else? I like to shop at Pathfinder , too! They have a great selection of outdoorsy clothes.

Michele Krucoff doesn’t just love Suncrest Towne Centre because she works there—as a nearby resident, she finds it a convenient hub for everyday needs and for gifts.

When Suncrest Towne Centre opened in 2009, it quickly became a destination for wellness, dining—and, of course, shopping.

Morgantown native Michele Krucoff joined the team there early on. After decades working with high-end retailers including Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City and Gucci in the Washington, D.C., area, she set her sights on a move back home and started at STC in 2011. She serves as commercial property manager there now and promotes it proudly. “We have a nice mix of national brands and retailers in combination with a variety of privately owned stores and restaurants,” Krucoff says. Shoppers at Suncrest Towne Center can find distinctive gift items at independent shops like Jacqueline’s Fine Jewelry for jewelry and watches, Park & Madison Boutique for the latest fashions, and Sheila’s Home for decor and gifts. Favorite national stores, Krucoff says, include Jos. A. Bank , Chico’s , and Loft . Wild Birds Unlimited offers everything for the backyard bird enthusiast, and Nonno Carlo is a market and deli focused on Italian fare and products, including exclusive imported items. And whether it’s for a shopping spree meal break, a business lunch, a meet- up with friends, or dinner out, Krucoff finds the mix of eateries at STC offers something for every occasion. “There are so many great restaurants here—like Bartini Prime , a top steakhouse in West Virginia; Pies & Pints , which began in our state; and the Sugar Bar , a full-service coffee and sweets shop,” she says. Cosmo , serving small plates and craft cocktails in an upscale bar and lounge atmosphere and just opened in October, is the newest spot in town for adult nightlife. “It’s a South Beach–meets–L.A. vibe with velvet seating, mood lighting, and a state-of- the-art sound system,” she says. “For gifts, shopping, and dining, each store at STC offers gift cards, which are wonderful for every season,” Krucoff adds—consider locally owned Pet Works for your furry friends and their people, Lavish Bridal & Prom Boutique for the future prom-goer, or And Yoga for the Zen seeker in your life. “We’re convenient to everything, and it’s the one area of town where you can find almost anything.”

I couldn’t find specific cuts and products that I was looking for in local grocery stores, so I started the butcher shop and market.” Working with master farmers in West Virginia and Pennsylvania, Straface has developed a meat case and market of fresh cuts, custom sandwiches, and specials. “I like to think that I’m going back in time to the day when the local butcher listened to the customer coming into his shop, giving them the quality meat they needed to feed their family good food.” Village Butcher and Market carries great gifts. Locally made are pasta from Tutto Gelato in Star City and bags of popcorn from Almost Heaven Kettle Corn of Morgantown. Other giftable items include sauces and rubs for meat, preserved vegetables from Pacific Pickle Works , sauces from Alla Famiglia , and TBJ Uncured Bacon Jam as well as mugs from Clay and Fire Studio and sheep’s milk soap from Wilson Family Farm in Smithfield, Pennsylvania. For West Virginia–sourced foodie gifts in town, Straface likes Appalachian Mercantile General Store and Cafe in Granville for its J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works products and many hand-crafted kitchen- and dining-related items. Local sources for Italian food products and kitchen wares are Nonno Carlo in Suncrest Towne Centre—“they have a nice selection of some higher-end items, some that they even import from Italy”—and San Marzano Italian Market for a wide range of authentic gift items. Of course, Pennsylvania Macaroni Company and other Strip District shops in Pittsburgh are go-tos for all things Italian. While you’re shopping, consider stopping at this foodie’s favorite eateries in town: Von Blaze , Peking House , and Lefty’s Place in Morgantown and, outside town, Short Story Brewing in Rivesville and Falls City Pub in Ohiopyle. Asked about kitchen items he uses at the Village Butcher that he’d recommend as gifts for others, Straface says he likes the precision of GLOBAL knives and the versatility of Our Place non-stick pans. “Quality products make great gifts,” he says.

Decor is both business and pleasure for Chuck Penn of Penn & Company. He shares his favorite spots in town for gifts for the home.

“Fragrance has an ability to transport us to a season, to a place, or to a memory,” says Chuck Penn, the craftsman behind more than 150 scents he

works with in his shop, Penn & Company , in Westover. From his first scent many years ago—an orange and clove fragrance he created for his mother—to the room sprays, warming pods, wax tarts, and more that fill his shop today, Penn handcrafts signature scents with a mission to share the joy of home aromas. Using fine ingredients and materials, sustainable practices, and refresher oils that make his scented items infinitely renewable, he fills the air with near-endless, year-round gift-giving possibilities. Penn finds his inspiration in shopping—he really loves to shop—and some of his favorite places for go-to gifts are right here in Morgantown. His ideal shopping day begins with the perfect cup of coffee at The Grind downtown and a stop by the Cupcakerie for their dreamy confections. He’d then spend much of his morning at the ever-eclectic and artsy River Fair Trade on High Street, where handmade and artisan items from around the world are displayed and sold, then stop in at Hoot and Howl on Walnut for drink mixes and stained glass. After lunch at Fresh Mint Indian Grill , he’d make the short drive to Beechurst Avenue for the gift items and gourmet oils of Rustic by Design . “I would classify their style as farmhouse modern,” he says. “There’s lots of wood and metal, unique vases and wooden bowls, and really cool fire pits. The two ladies who run it, Jan and Tammy, have amazing taste. And their Christmas decor is just breathtaking.” After a stop at The Tea Shoppe at Seneca Center —“so many tea gifts!”—he’d head over to the Morgantown Mall for the handmade primitives of Merrywood Lane —“they have that weathered look, lots of wood, aged tea-stained items, just very classic”—then head up to Kelly & Co. on Blue Horizon Drive. “They are two sisters, twins, who opened up just before Christmas last year,” Penn says. “They are definitively farmhouse, that neatly painted, washed-out white, really elegant farmhouse decor.” He’d make an antiquing jaunt to Washington and then Uniontown in Pennsylvania. Penn would end his day back in Morgantown with a final stop at the open-late Phoenix Bakery on Kingwood Street for a loaf of their olive and feta bread. “I really like to support local businesses, and the choices in Morgantown are endless,” he says.

For the paddler “We’re lucky to have lots of places to get paddling gear in town. Pathfinder is a great locally owned shop with a nice selection, and Dunham’s is a regional chain with a good-sized inventory. For fishing kayaks and canoes, Sportsman’s Emporium is local and knowledgeable. Each of the bigger chains— Bass Pro Shops , Dick’s Sporting Goods , and Sportsman’s Warehouse —carries a selection, too. “Nice gifts for paddlers: A small or medium-size dry bag for keeping your things together and protected is a perfect gift. A whistle is a great stocking stuffer—that’s required when you’re on West Virginia waters. I always carry a small light, like a Maglite. And something that’s really useful is a portable phone charger—you want to be sure you can communicate if you need advice or directions or you’re having trouble, or you just want to send photos. That’s a fine gift for anybody who does outdoor stuff.” — Mary Wimmer , avid kayaker and coordinator of the Morgantown Area Paddlers

For the skier or camper “Cross-country skiers have been

bags. With a great headlamp, you can hike and finish up after dark with no problem, and Pathfinder ranks high in that department. For cold weather camping, mid-weight synthetic long underwear is a difference-maker— start your search for that at Dick’s Sporting Goods . “Gift ideas for both: Nothing is better than a great pair of mittens! Hand warmer packets make excellent stocking stuffers. Softshell pants revolutionized winter, and wool hats lined with fleece are the ticket. I love 100% wool socks by Darn Tough—you can find these at Sportsman’s Warehouse .” — Adam Polinski , loves to camp and ski, longtime active member of Coopers Rock Foundation

buying their skis, bindings, and boots at Pathfinder for decades. It’s also the only shop in town for downhill gear—they have staff trained in boot-fitting and ski techs who can install bindings and tune skis. For accessories, sunglasses or goggles are important for protection from wind and sun. Cross-country skiing poles of adjustable length can be optimized for a variety of snow conditions. A $5 ski scraper for less- than-stellar snow conditions is good in the stocking. “When it comes to camping gear, Dunham’s is the bargain basement in town. Tents there under $200 are amazing compared to a generation ago. It’s also your first stop for sleeping

For the cyclist “My bike was squeaking on the rail-trail so my friend and I stopped at Wamsley Cycles , and they fixed it and didn’t charge me anything—they said just come back another time for a full service. I definitely will! I plan on buying another bike, too, and I’ll buy it there. For gifts, they have all the accessories, from small gifts like a water bottle cage or gloves, and cycling helmets, of course, all the way up to all kinds of bikes. For someone who doesn’t have pant straps, those are useful—you don’t want your pants getting stuck in your chain. A bike light is also useful.” — A. Iyengar , a recreational cyclist in Morgantown

For the bowhunter “I live in Tucker County now, but I started going to Sportsman’s Emporium when I was a student at WVU. It has a great family atmosphere—you feel welcome there whether you’re just looking or they’re fitting you for a bow or you need accessories. I like to go to the independent shops, there or Sportsman’s Refuge at Cheat Lake—the small shops really know the gear, because they handle it every day. An inexpensive gift for a bowhunter is arrow wraps. A sight or a release is also a good gift. And a dozen arrows—you can never have too many arrows. My favorite brand is Gold Tip.” — Daniel Clower , bowhunter and competitive archer
