Why October Is a Blast at Anthony’s Lawn Care STILL TRICK-OR-TREATING AT HEART

I was always one of those kids who got super into Halloween. I would stay out as late as my parents let me and visit every neighborhood for trick-or-treating, looking for the best candy. I honestly probably kept doing that for too long with my friends. I might have been a little too old by the time we stopped. Admittedly, I still love Halloween. From dressing up to seeing my kids don their costumes, this time of year is a blast for me, my

beloved holiday house decorators. The neighbors were known throughout the community for their elaborate

holiday displays. Whether it was Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or even St. Patrick’s Day, they went all out.

Since 2021, the Anthony’s Lawn Care team has made it a tradition to dress up. It all started when I bought some inflatable dinosaur

suits, and we started wearing them to mow lawns at some of our client’s houses. I’ll never forget how excited those kids were to see a T-Rex show up to do their yard work. Last year, we did a hilarious video of the whole team in costume. As landscapers, October is a happy time for us because the shift from 105 degrees is a nice change of pace when you work outdoors. Halloween has always been a special time for me, and it’s even more meaningful now that I can share the fun with my family and our team at Anthony’s Lawn Care. From the Ninja Turtle costumes to the inflatable dinosaur suits we’ve sported as a crew, Halloween has become a way to connect with our community and bring smiles to everyone we meet. Now, here I am, owning a company and still getting dressed up. So, I might still be too old to do all this Halloween stuff, but I am still having a blast. Happy Halloween.

business, and I was only about 26. Sometimes, we barely had a few dollars

It’s hard to pick a favorite Halloween or costume from over the years, but I loved the Ninja Turtles when I was younger, so dressing up as Donatello and getting to be a “hero in a half-shell” for a day was pretty amazing. I know one

to our name and I was working a lot. But, what our neighbors did every year was so much fun and brought a lot of joy to our neighborhood. It inspired me, and eventually, we got into decorating, too, and became friends with

of my kids was a Ninja Turtle at one point, too. My children love the season, and we always go to the local pumpkin patch to pick the perfect pumpkins to carve. We check off every box on the list of must-do Halloween traditions. One of my favorite parts of the holiday is filling our yard with decorations, giant inflatables, lights, and all the fun little scary things associated with this season. This tradition has a bit of an origin story all of its own. In 2013, when we bought our first house, we lived next door to one of the town’s most

our neighbors. They moved (and so did we), and that amazing

home that regularly won best-decorated house isn’t the same. My neighbor has since passed away, but we still

like to decorate the house as big

as we can, partly as a tribute in his honor for sparking this tradition

SIMPLE FALL LANDSCAPING PROJECTS TO ELEVATE YOUR GARDEN Eco-Chic Autumn

Quarterbacks are often the most popular and well-known players on their respective football teams, but they couldn’t do what they do without the help of their teammates. Wide receivers are valuable assets to any team, as they run routes, shake their defenders, and give the quarterback a target to throw to. While no wide receiver has ever won the Most Valuable Player award, receivers like Jerry Rice, Cooper Kupp, and Randy Moss have been invaluable to their team’s success. TOP WIDE RECEIVERS TO WATCH THIS NFL SEASON

Fall doesn’t just mean it’s time for sweater weather and pumpkin spice; it’s the perfect time

of year to give your yard an eco-friendly makeover. From native plants that reduce water usage to DIY projects that upcycle autumn’s bounty, there are easy, sustainable projects you and your family can do this month. Get ready to rake in the compliments with these fall landscaping ideas that are as kind to the Earth as they are to your curb appeal!

Since the NFL season is underway, now is the best time to familiarize yourself with a few wide receivers poised for breakout performances.

CEEDEE LAMB, DALLAS COWBOYS: Lamb led the league in receptions last year and was in the top three for receiving yards and touchdowns. This is a make-or-break year for the Cowboys, so expect another all-star showing from Lamb. PUKA NACUA, LOS ANGELES RAMS: Not many people had heard of Nacua before the 2023 season, but he proved he belonged in the spotlight. Last season, Nacua set the rookie record for receptions and receiving yards as a fifth-round selection, and he could repeat those numbers this year. TYREEK HILL, MIAMI DOLPHINS: Hill has been impressing football fans since he first took the field for Kansas City in 2016 and remains one of the fastest players in the league. He led the league in receiving yards last year, and he could do the same this year if he stays healthy. AMON-RA ST. BROWN, DETROIT LIONS: Did anyone expect the Lions to make the NFC championship last season? St. Brown was a big reason for their success, and he’s entering the 2024 season with a new contract, more confidence, and better chemistry with quarterback Jared Goff. MARVIN HARRISON JR., ARIZONA CARDINALS: Harrison Jr. was a standout player at Ohio State University last year and will surely come into his rookie season strong after the Cardinals drafted him fourth overall. He’ll have his work cut out for him with the lackluster Cardinals’ offense, but he’s still worth keeping an eye on as the season progresses.

COMPOST Composting helps to reduce waste in landfills, improve soil quality, and provide nutrient-rich food for your garden beds. Instead of throwing away those big piles of orange leaves this time of year, create a compost pile and add those in. You can fence off a small area for your compost and add vegetable scraps, twigs, and other green and brown materials. You can purchase a small composting bin or create one; just ensure it has proper drainage. COZY SEATING Fall is a wonderful time to be outdoors and enjoy the cool weather. You can create a comfy seating area with recycled items and materials so it’s stylish and sustainable. Look around the house for a nice table or wicker chairs, and add some LED lighting to the space to create the ultimate autumn lounging area. Your local thrift store may have decorations you can add to this space or your yard for an extra splash of color. REFRESH YOUR YARD Do your second round of spring cleaning this month. With the weather cooling down, it’s a wonderful time to tidy up your yard. Remove any weeds or annuals wilting or past their prime. It’s also a great time to patch up bare spots in your lawn. This will make your landscaping look fresh and ensure your yard stays healthy through the winter months. Embracing these eco-friendly fall landscaping projects not only brightens up your yard but also contributes to a healthier planet. By composting those fallen leaves, crafting a cozy, recycled seating area, and giving your yard a seasonal refresh, you’re making choices that benefit both your home and the environment. So, grab your gardening gloves and get started!

WINTER’S COMING

KEEP YOUR TREES THRIVING THROUGH THE COLD

With winter on the way, our gardens and yards will face a new set of chilly challenges. Frosty temperatures, snowfall, and strong winds can take a toll on your trees and shrubs, so it’s essential to begin safeguarding them now. From wrapping and mulching to pruning, there are simple and effective

MULCHING Mulching can be very beneficial in the winter, helping to regulate the soil temperature, retain moisture, and suppress weeds. Once the ground has frozen, you can add a 3–4- inch layer of mulch around the base of your trees and shrubs. This will ensure the soil remains insulated. Make sure to keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent root rot. WATERING It’s important to keep your trees and shrubs hydrated if you want them to survive the winter months. During the fall, water your shrubs and trees regularly, especially if it’s been a dry season. Try to water these plants enough to moisten the soil 8–10 inches below the ground until the first freeze of winter arrives. Many trees go dormant this time of year, but they will still need water to survive. If there is little to no snow, aim to water them 1–2 times a month until the spring. At Anthony’s Lawn Care, we’re experts when it comes to trees throughout every season. As winter approaches, let us help you prepare your trees to withstand the cold. ways to protect them from the harsh elements. Get ready to dig in, because we are sharing some of the top tips to keep your trees safe this winter.

WRAPPING Some trees are particularly susceptible to

drying out during the colder winter months. When it’s cold, the ground can freeze, cutting off the plant’s roots from water. Trees can also develop frost cracks, vertical cracks that lead to splitting. To protect trees or shrubs, you can wrap them in crepe paper or canvas attached to frames around the plants.

How to Protect Your Plants From Winter Woes Take a Break 4 Your Guide to Wildlife Tracking Fun

Unlock the Secrets of Animal Footprints Become a Nature Detective

Have you ever discovered a mysterious set of animal tracks? Reading those footprints can be your ticket to uncovering the hidden world of wildlife right under your nose. Whether you’re on a camping trip hoping to spot one of your favorite critters or simply curious about the pawprints you stumbled on at home, we’re here to show you how to become a nature detective. PREPARE AND OBSERVE You’ll have the best luck spotting tracks or other signs of animal life in places where wildlife is known to frequent. Find watering holes or other areas where animals may feed or gather. Tracks need a suitable medium, like snow, mud, sand, or soft dirt, for them to show. Regardless of where you’re heading, bring a field guide, a map of the area, hiking supplies, and tools for tracking, like a ruler, magnifying glass, and a camera. COUNT THE TOES Your main clues to the owner of these natural calling cards are the number of toe and claw marks on the print. Canines, like wolves, and

felines, like cougars, all have four toes, but you can see a significant difference between their claws. Cats have retractable claws, so their pawprints won’t always have claws. In contrast, birds have distinctive tracks with three long, skinny, forward-facing toes.

IDENTIFY YOUR PREY When you have identified what animal family left the print behind, you can begin to home in on its exact species. Use a small ruler to measure the size of the track to give you clues. A wolf, for example, has similar prints to a dog, but they are about 2 inches wider. Context is also a crucial factor when you’re tracking. Think about the animals that live in the area. Would

there be any domesticated dogs in the woods where you are hiking? Document your tracks with photos and notes in a nature journal. If you’re still unsure, go online and look at various animal tracks. You may find what you’re looking for!

So, next time you stumble upon animal tracks, get out your ruler and camera! Those prints could lead you on a great adventure!
