WINTER’S COMING

KEEP YOUR TREES THRIVING THROUGH THE COLD

With winter on the way, our gardens and yards will face a new set of chilly challenges. Frosty temperatures, snowfall, and strong winds can take a toll on your trees and shrubs, so it’s essential to begin safeguarding them now. From wrapping and mulching to pruning, there are simple and effective

MULCHING Mulching can be very beneficial in the winter, helping to regulate the soil temperature, retain moisture, and suppress weeds. Once the ground has frozen, you can add a 3–4- inch layer of mulch around the base of your trees and shrubs. This will ensure the soil remains insulated. Make sure to keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent root rot. WATERING It’s important to keep your trees and shrubs hydrated if you want them to survive the winter months. During the fall, water your shrubs and trees regularly, especially if it’s been a dry season. Try to water these plants enough to moisten the soil 8–10 inches below the ground until the first freeze of winter arrives. Many trees go dormant this time of year, but they will still need water to survive. If there is little to no snow, aim to water them 1–2 times a month until the spring. At Anthony’s Lawn Care, we’re experts when it comes to trees throughout every season. As winter approaches, let us help you prepare your trees to withstand the cold. ways to protect them from the harsh elements. Get ready to dig in, because we are sharing some of the top tips to keep your trees safe this winter.

WRAPPING Some trees are particularly susceptible to

drying out during the colder winter months. When it’s cold, the ground can freeze, cutting off the plant’s roots from water. Trees can also develop frost cracks, vertical cracks that lead to splitting. To protect trees or shrubs, you can wrap them in crepe paper or canvas attached to frames around the plants.
