THE
Meeting King Charles! Buckingham Palace
BRITSH EMPIRE MEDAL On Wednesday 3rd May my parents, Paloma and Joe, went to King Charles’ first royal garden party at Buckingham Palace. The reason why they had the pleasure of going to such an extraordinary event (without ME, you have to be over 18 to go!) is because my dad was awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honours List. I interviewed him so that we could find out more: What did you get your BEM for? For services to music - I have spent my life helping thousands of people to play music. I believe that music is very important in keeping people happy, and able to face the world we live in. Plus, I really like loud raucous music! Who did you meet? Amazingly - we met someone else from the Abbey community, Janine Bowers Wild who also got a BEM! It just shows that there are lots of people amongst our neighbours who do very good things for other people. I was impressed with the palace staff, especially the posh gentleman who rescued my wife when she spilled jam down the front of her very smart dress! What was your favourite part of the day? It was very interesting to see someone like the king who is so famous and familiar to us all, but when you get up close you realise that he is just a person like you and me. When Paloma had her picture taken with two of the guards they all looked very funny! Although I am annoyed that I couldn’t be part of this adventure I feel very proud of my parents (who definitely didn’t smuggle me a piece of cake from the Palace in my Mum’s handbag). [Ed - What a wonderful story - really proud!]
