Automatic Train Protection Alstom Automatic Train Protection (ATP) equipment is a safety system that supervises: • Train speed against permitted train and line speeds • Braking on the approach to speed restrictions, signals at danger and buffer stops Alstom ATP provides information, warns if braking is required and, if necessary, intervenes by making a full service brake application. The system will make an emergency brake application and bring the train to a stand if it detects the train has passed a signal at danger without authority. Alstom ATP will also make an emergency brake application if the train rolls away. Signalling Solutions is able to supply both trackside and trainborne ATP equipment
Signalling Solutions Limited (SSL) was formed in 2007 by combining the complementary signalling resources and products of Alstom Transport Information Solutions UK and Balfour Beatty Rail Projects. We lead the market in train control solutions, meeting customer requirements for design, installation, testing, commissioning and product support for signalling, power and telecommunications applications in the UK. We are now the sole route to market for signalling products and services from both companies in the UK and Ireland. We aim to be the preferred supplier of world class train control systems for the UK and Ireland.

High Voltage Impulse Track Circuits The track circuit is a fundamental component of the fail-safe system on railway networks as its main function is to detect, whatever the conditions, a train on a track. This function is carried out by Alstom’s High Voltage Impulse Track Circuit on more than thirty
Railway Industry – Motors for signalling applications
major railways in the world. HW Point Machines
The Alstom Type HW electrically operated; non- trailable, point machine is a well established product, extensively used on railways in the UK and world-wide. Its robust and high integrity design features include full locking and detection facilities and provide for ease of accessibility to all parts and speed of operational maintenance. Equally suitable for left or right hand layouts the HW will operate single or double ended points, double slips or movable switch diamonds, regardless of variations in switch fitting or weight of rail. The machine weighs 220 kg (485 lbs) - sturdier than light weight machines and a decided advantage over heavier machines when installation is required in remote or difficult areas. Fitted with two externally controlled heaters the machines can operate efficiently in a wide range of ambient temperatures. Point machines are now available fitted with plug couplers. External plug coupler parts should be ordered direct from BICC/ NRS.

SO Hydraulic Supplementary Drives The ALSTOM SO system is a range of hydraulic actuators, that provides positive point blade movement proportional to their position in the turnout. The system includes both back drives and swing nose frog drives (originally developed for the Italian market), to meet the requirement for various lengths of turnout, including high speed. Each individual drive contains its own integral lock and electrical lock detection to provide confirmation that the correct turnout geometry has been safely established. These locks and electrical detectors are sealed within the body of the drive to avoid contamination. Once an actuator is locked the hydraulic drive pressure is reduced to ambient. The system was specifically designed to provide zero maintenance for 15 years (or 500,000 operations). Existing cost of ownership data shows 0.8% of original cost per year. To allow for machine tamping, the drives are mounted on bearer and all connections are clear of the tamping zone. The actuators are protected from damage during inadvertent trailing by a mechanical fuse. Speed of operation is governed by applied hydraulic pressure and flow. The system is supplied as a complete kit for a specific turnout and comprises:- • Actuators (complete with rail attachments) • Hydraulic connections • Electrical connections (to line side) • Actuator protection covers • Stretcher bar protection cover • Hose protection covers • Mounting hardware
Solid State Interlocking Signalling Solutions provide the Alstom Solid State Interlocking (SSI), a proven electronic signalling system used on all types of railways throughout the world. The modular format of SSI ensures an optimization of ease of design, installation and maintenance for a wide range of system applications. SSI provides high levels of safety and availability and allows comprehensive diagnostics, such as self monitoring, which report failures quickly and accurately to maintenance staff. ‘Turbo’ (2 MHz) Solid State Interlocking In line with the commitment to providing solutions for improving, maintaining and extending the life of railways for our customers, Alstom developed a ‘Turbo’ upgrade for SSI. ‘Turbo’ SSI features a processor that operates at twice the speed of conventional SSI. The faster processor delivers twice as much data processing in the same elapsed time as 1MHz SSI interlockings. In addition, ‘Turbo’ SSI enables support for a greater number of trackside functional modules (TFMs).

Smartlock TM 400 Alstom’s SmartlockTM 400 System (SML400) is a computer-based interlocking (CBI) system designed specifically as a successor to Solid State Interlocking (SSI) for all signalling applications in the United Kingdom. Compared with SSI, SML400 offers: • Reduction in number of cross-boundary communications required due to increase in potential size of interlocking coverage; • A reduction in the physical size of central interlocking equipment; • Compatibility with current communications technology; • Updated facilities for the maintainer: graphical interface, improved fault analysis; • Improved application engineering tools for test and incident analysis. Smartlock 400 retains the Trackside Functional Modules (TFM) and trackside communications link that are used with SSI. It can interface with a conventional signaller’s entrance/exit (NX) panel and is also compatible with VDU-based Control Systems, such as the Integrated Electronic Control Centre (IECC), or Modular Control System (MCS). Main elements of a typical Smartlock 400 Scheme.
NT & NQ Transformer and Transformer Rectifier Class II Transformers
Class II Transformer Rectifiers Class II double insulated hybrid transformer/rectifier for relay and SSI signalling systems 650V to 120V d.c The Signalling Transformer/Rectifiers provide the interface between class II (Double Insulated) 650V power system and 120Vd.c. points machines, in a signalling system. The construction of the transformer in the transformer/ rectifier allows system compliance with Electricity at Works Regulations and NR/SP/ELP/27243. The internal transformer complies with NR/L2/SIG/30007, issue 2. The internal transformers provide 8kV minimum impulse withstand voltage for supplies greater than 170V in compliance with BS7671 to provide additional protection against ground potential rise in areas with d.c. or a.c. traction systems.
Class II double insulated hybrid transformers/low power-T/J combined units for relay and SSI signalling systems 650V/230V/110V/50Vd.c The signalling transformers provide the interface between class II (Double Insulated) 650/440/400V power system and 110V signalling systems. The outputs include multiple 110V/121/135Va.c and 50Vd.c for signalling, or 230V for telecoms and hot axle box detectors, all depending on part number chosen. The transformers comply with NR/L2/SIG/30007 issue 2 and allow system compliance with Electricity at Works Regulations and NR/SP/ELP/27243. Each transformer provides an 8kV minimum impulse withstand voltage in compliance with BS7671 to provide additional protection against ground potential rise, particularly in areas with d.c. or a.c. traction systems.
