Unfortunately, it also puts us closer to the cold and flu season. Here are some steps that can help protect yourself and others from getting ill: 2. Wash your hands! Wash with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol- based sanitizer if soap and water are not available. Be sure to wash after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose. 3. Avoid touching your nose, mouth, and eyes. It may be hard to do when you get powder or seasoning on your face, but keep in mind that germs can spread this way! 4. Cover your coughs and sneezes. Use a tissue, or sneeze into your elbow if necessary. Dispose of tissues in the trash. 5. Keep frequently touched surfaces clean- Such as telephones, keyboards, door handles, lift handles, etc. 6. Think first if you share. If you must use other workers’ tools, workstations, or other equipment, be sure to clean it first. 7. Don’t spread the flu! If you are sick with flu-like illness, stay home! Remember that influenza is a respiratory illness. Flu symptoms include fever (over 100), chills, cough, and sore throat. In addition, symptoms can some- times include runny nose, body aches, headache and tiredness. The CDC recommends that sick workers stay home for at least 24 hours after being fever free. 8. Get vaccinated against seasonal flu when the vaccine is available! Getting a flu shot is one of the best ways to help prevent getting the flu! And remember, it is a myth that the flu vaccine can cause the flu. The vaccine is composed of inactivated flu proteins and it is impossible for them to “cause” the flu! 19 5 19 5 20 12 28 18 1.
