Do you experience pain in the buttock, leg, or even your foot? If so, you may be experiencing sciatica. Sciatica is a common form of back and leg pain that is often misunderstood by sufferers. People frequently have questions about what sciatica is, why it occurs and how to find relief from the intense pain it can cause from the low back down to the feet. If you are suffering from sciatica, it is important to find its root cause. Many people often think an x-ray or expensive MRI is first needed to figure out what is causing pain. Having a lot of tests doesn’t mean you will find its root cause. Recent studies show that nearly 1 million of MRIs done for sciatica fail to find a treatable cause. With a new imaging technique called magnetic resonance neurography, 69% of the patients were found to have a trapped sciatic nerve deep in the buttock by a muscle

called the piriformis. It is known that in about 25% of the general population, the sciatic nerve pierces through the piriformis muscle and can be susceptible to abnormal pressure and irritation. Why Does Sciatica Occur? If therearechanges inposture, musclestrengthorpelvic alignment, the nerve can be compressed which leads to the quite common low back and sciatic nerve pains. The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in your body. Iteven reachesdown to the footand therefore, can be irritated anywhere along its path. With sciatica, the consequent ache can be felt anywhere from the base of the spine, the buttocks or the back of the thigh and legs. Even tingling sensations in the toes can be attributed at times to the impingement of the sciatic nerve.

This doesn’t have to involve a complete house remodel. You can make your home safe from falls with just a few basic changes. Senior care experts offer the following advice for preventing falls at home: 9Ways to Prevent Falls at Home

1. Clean up clutter. The easiest method for preventing falls is to keep your home neat and tidy. Remove all clutter, such as stacks of old newspapers and magazines, especially from hallways and staircases. 2. Repair or remove tripping hazards. Sometimes home fixtures can contribute to falls, which can then lead to back pain and other injuries. Examine every room and hallway, looking for itemssuchas loosecarpet, slippery throw rugs, or wood floorboards that stick up. Then repair, remove,or replace those items formoreeffective fall prevention. 3. Install grab bars and handrails. These safety devicesarecrucial forgoingupanddownstairs, gettingonandoff the toilet, andstepping inand out of the bathtub without injuring yourself. Install grab bars by toilets and bathtubs and handrails in stairways and hallways. Have a handyman or family member help with this if necessary.

4. Avoid wearing loose clothing. You want to feel comfortable at home, but baggy clothes can sometimes make you more likely to fall. Opt for better-fittingandproperlyhemmedclothing that doesn’t bunch up or drag on the ground. 5. Light it right. Inadequate lighting isanothermajor hazard. To create a home that’s more suitable for the elderly, install brighter light bulbs where needed, particularly in stairways and narrow hallways. Add night-lights in bedrooms and bathrooms for better guidance at night. 6. Wearshoes.Socksmaybecomfortable, but they present a slipping risk. Preventing falls at home canbeassimpleaswearingshoes.Youcanalso purchase non-slip socks that have grips on the solesof the feet ifshoesare toouncomfortable. 7. Make it nonslip. Even with precautions like

guardrails, stairs can present a significant falling hazard. “If possible, live on one level,” says Kaplan. “Otherwise be extra-careful when you negotiate stairs.” If it’s not possible to live on one level, try to limit the trips you take up and down the stairs. 9. Move more carefully. Many people fall at home bymoving tooquickly fromasitting toastanding position and vice versa. Pause after going from lyingdown tosittingand fromsitting tostanding. Also take a pause before using the railing on stairs, whether going up or down.
