THE ALASKA MINER JOURNAL: The publication is member-only news mailed to AMA members, eight times a year, in months when the Magazine is not published. The Alaska Miner Journal is dedicated to those who work in and support the mining industry in Alaska, its commitment to the people, and the resources of our state. Our goal is to disseminate information on responsible mineral development, educating the public about the value of mining, providing information for our membership and the general public, providing policymakers the information they need to understand the mining industry and monitor political and regulatory processes affecting mining in Alaska.

FAIRBANKS — Kinross Fort Knox, Usibelli Coal Mine, and Northern Star Resources’ Pogo Mine have announced a partnership to bolster mental health resources in interior Alaska. Each partner mine will be contributing $15,000 annually for three years, totaling $135,000, towards funding an executive director position to staff the Fairbanks Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Nenette Rogers was named the Fairbanks NAMI Executive Director in mid-June and will be the face of the organization in Fairbanks. These funds will allow her to focus on pursuing grants, recruiting donation dollars, and provide time for her to expand NAMI’s reach and treatment in Interior Alaska. Kinross proposed the initial partnership after a discussion with state NAMI leadership, which led to a collaboration with the two neighboring mines. “Kinross approached NAMI last year to ask if they could expand their reach and impact if they had more support, and their response was a resounding yes,” said Anna Atchison, External Affairs Manager, Kinross Alaska. “We are very happy that our two other local mines were equally excited to collaborate to address this important issue in Interior Alaska.” Health and safety are core values that each of the mines uphold and share. “When it comes to our employees, it’s just as important to have resources available that support their emotional
well-being as it is to having the right personal protective equipment on-site to physically keep them out of harms’ way,” said Lisa Herbert, Vice President of Public Relations for Usibelli Coal Mine. “Today, as always, we are standing together so that all people affected by mental illness may live healthy, fulfilling lives supported by a community that cares,” said Nenette Rogers, Executive Director, NAMI Fairbanks. “We are very grateful to Kinross Fort Knox, Northern Star Resources’ Pogo Mine, Usibelli Coal Mine and the Usibelli Foundation for their collaboration to provide generous and long-term support to assist NAMI Fairbanks in providing peer support, education, and advocacy to the greater Fairbanks community.” Support of NAMI’s mission is becoming increasingly important as the nation saw a rising need for mental health care and resources during the 2020 pandemic. “Like many other businesses in our community, finding ways to support mental health initiatives have been at the forefront of discussions at Pogo,” said Wendie MacNaughton, external affairs manager for Northern Star Resources Limited. “We look forward to seeing how NAMI Fairbanks can expand the support they’ve been providing to those in crisis.” Kinross Fort Knox, Usibelli Coal Mine, and Northern Star Resources were pleased to help implement this next step in addressing mental health in the local community.

A Message from the Executive Director
Welcome Our Newest Miner!
Dear Members, It seems the only constant is change.
There seems no end to the new set of rules and regulations and reversals and ridiculous challenges from Washington, despite the long and excellent track record we have for mining safely and responsibly. There also seems to be no appreciation that mining has ensured a better quality of life and a secure future for families from Ketchikan to Kotzebue. Families who see the reality of earning a great living in a job and industry they love. Know that your association — and this includes our staff, our officers, directors and volunteers — are working tirelessly with our Alaska delegation to ensure that they understand our needs and concerns, and that they are carrying that
Welcome to the AMA family, Jace Luiten! On Thursday, Aug. 5 at 11:39 a.m., AMA’s amazing Membership and Fundraising Director Jennifer, along with husband, Tony, and big brother Lucas, welcomed Jace at 8 pounds,10 ounces. Everyone is home and doing wonderfully!
We all feel that it was just yesterday we were moving into summer, our mining season, and our hopes for a return to normalcy. And while fall is nearly here and our efforts are moving full speed ahead, the questions about dealing with the pandemic continue to weigh on our short and long-term decisions. At the time of writing this, the situation has worsened, with Alaska returning to a “High” state of alert, our healthcare system stressed, and positive cases nearing their worst levels. Since it began, AMA has always approached the
message through Congress and to the White House. Our country needs us, what we do and what we produce. Our country needs the critical minerals that Alaska is rich with, if we can just produce them. And even if our country doesn’t always understand it, we are a key part of this new green electric based economy that they envision. We’re going to get through this, again, together. And we are going to see good things along the way. Such as our newest member of the AMA team, Jace William Luiten, who entered this world Aug. 5. Baby Jace, mom, Jennifer, Dad, Tony, and big brother Lucas are doing great. Jennifer continued her hard and invaluable work as our membership and fundraising director, as well as key leader of our convention committee, almost until the minute Jace arrived. We are very proud of her and happy for the whole family (and I really miss her, a lot). I wish you all a safe and prosperous ending to your field seasons, and as we come back in and greet fall, I remind you to stay vigilant on your health. The single best thing you can do to fight this pandemic is to get vaccinated, for yourself and for those who cannot. If not for health reasons, know that the private sector is beginning to respond to vaccination status, and the health of our industry, economy, and communities is going to play a big role in our potential opportunities moving forward.
pandemic with an abundance of caution to protect our members and our communities. We made the difficult decision to cancel two Conventions, suspend branch meetings, and overall disrupted our Association’s networking and outreach efforts. The widespread availability of vaccines brought much hope this year, and as I’ve traveled to various parts of Alaska this summer, the one resounding theme of my conversations with you has been “We’re having the Convention, right?” And we’d really, really like to. But as we look toward November, we find ourselves once again examining what we must do to mitigate risks. Recently, I sent out a survey and call for feedback on how we proceed with the November event. We know you are planning travel, purchasing materials, and designating staff time. You’re also generously investing in AMA with sponsorships and vendor booths. We are keeping this in mind as we aim to have a decision on the event format in the beginning of September, to give you the time you need to make your plans and decisions. We will advise you all via email, and please continue to watch our AlaskaMiners.org website for more details. The good news is that despite the likely social cautions coming our way, we are busier than ever. We are all praying this pandemic nightmare will end soon, but as always, as Alaska miners we will do whatever’s necessary to get the job done. The challenges from the Biden Administration are a direct threat to the way we mine in Alaska (and how seemingly any resource economy gets anything done, anywhere in our nation).

Hecla Greens Creek Mine Earns Prestigious Honor from Alaska Chamber
Rita Sholton Large Business of the Year Award Exemplifies Leadership, Ethics
funding to over 350 Alaska residents to help gain the skills necessary to be successful in the mining industry,” wrote UAS Chancellor Karen Carey. “With over $500,000 going directly to student aid, Hecla Greens Creek is UAS’ largest sponsor of students.” Constance Hulbert, AEL&P’s President and General Manager, noted that the power sales agreement with Greens Creek has “benefitted Juneau residents to the tune of over $70 million since 2009. The purchase of renewable energy from AEL&P reduces the carbon emissions that the mine would otherwise produce while helping to pay for hydroelectric infrastructure that will benefit Juneau residents for generations to come.” “As a ‘corporate citizen’ Hecla has consistently ensured that they participate in and contribute to local organizations through a very generous program of direct donations and thorough their Foundation,” wrote Craig Dahl, Executive Director of the Juneau Chamber. “Even though Hecla was experiencing huge additional costs to maintain their 24/7 operations, they continued to contribute to the organizations they had to supported in years past to help them through their own challenging time. They could have said ‘no … others did.”
The Alaska Chamber recently named Hecla Greens Creek recipient of its prestigious Rita Sholton Large Business of the Year award, which pays tribute to businesses that exemplify leadership, ethics, and organization. “Hecla Greens Creek exemplifies special involvement in Alaska’s communities through an excellent business reputation, longterm commitment to the community, emphasis on safety and environmental responsibility, and their effective efforts to protect their workers and the community during the pandemic,” wrote Deantha Skibinski, Executive Director of the Alaska Miners Association, which nominated Greens Creek. “It is a real honor be recognized by the Alaska Chamber as the Large Business of the Year” said Brian Erickson, Hecla Greens Creek Vice President and General Manager. “This is truly a credit to every one of our employees who, in spite of unprecedented challenges, helped make this past year such a success.” The Greens Creek nomination was supported by the University of Alaska Southeast, Greater Juneau Chamber of Commerce, and Alaska Electric Light & Power. “Since 2011 Greens Creek has provided scholarship

2021 Donlin Gold Backhaul Project to Remove E-waste from Y-K Delta
For the fifth year in a row, multiple entities and tribes are coming together to assist Yukon-Kuskokwim (Y-K) Delta region villages with the removal of hazardous electronic waste. The goal of this effort is to safely dispose of electronics and other materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Through Aug.18, the barge owned and operated by the Native Village of Napaimute will visit 17 communities along the Kuskokwim River to safely collect e-waste materials, such as discarded computers, television sets, old batteries and more. Thirteen other communities, including McGrath and Nikolai, will have materials flown to Bethel by Grant Aviation, Ryan Air and Alaska Air Transit. Tribal staff in each of the communities have agreed to assist with coordination to ensure e-waste materials are safely packaged and brought to the barge for collection. These items will then be taken to Bethel for storage, repackaging and shipment to Anchorage for safe disposal. After careful consideration of the COVID-19 pandemic and consultation with each participating community,
safety measures have been updated to include social distancing, face masks and increased sanitization practices to protect all who are involved in the program. Delta Backhaul Company, a solid waste consulting company, has worked closely with the Association of Village Council Presidents (AVCP) and Donlin Gold over the past four years to assist with logistics and transportation planning for the Kuskokwim Regional Household Hazardous Waste Backhaul program. Sixty thousand pounds of e-waste were collected and shipped to Seattle and Anchorage for recycling or disposal from the two events in 2020. “Over the last five years, along with our partners, we have collected and removed nearly 300,000 pounds of waste that would otherwise end up in landfills, in waterways or in areas harmful to families and children. We are thrilled to be a good neighbor and a partner with a variety of organizations in the Y-K region for the past twenty-five years,” said Kristina Woolston, External Affairs Manager for Donlin Gold.

In Memoriam: Donald E. Mullikin
In Memoriam: Deborah Kendrick
Donald E. Mullikin passed away June 30 near sunset, in Homer, Alaska. Born in Springfield, Missouri, Don grew up loving to hunt and fish in the Ozark mountains. He married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Judy, in 1968. In 1970, they traveled to Alaska to see the state, over the years living in Fairbanks, Anchorage, Eagle River and Homer. When later asked by family and friends in Missouri when he planned to return, the reply was “I’m not done looking.” He was mischievous and loved practical jokes. The care he received the last 12 hours of his life at South Peninsula Hospital was excellent, despite their lack of whoopie cushions. Don, a professional land surveyor, conducted large- and small-scale land surveys for 44 years all over Alaska with innovative methods, but his passion was placer gold mining, which he was engaged in up to the last day of his life. He marveled at all labor saving mechanical devices and believed miracle glue and duct tape could fix most anything. Generous to a fault, Don believed hard work should be rewarded. He had an inquisitive mind, a zest for adventure, a fun-loving sense of humor, an honest commitment to dealing straight with others, a respect for family, the ability to figure creative solutions to
complex issues, and a generosity that was heart based. He disliked administrative regulations. He rejoiced in helping others have fun. Don is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Christopher (Ola); grandchildren, Hayden and Sierra; sister; Dottie Kay (Ed Wollen); brother, Tim
It is with great sadness that the family of Deborah Kendrick announces her passing due to cancer treatment complications May 12 in California. Debbie was born and raised in Richmond, Calif., but considered Alaska her true home where she had lived for almost 50 years since first moving to the state in 1972. Debbie worked on the Alyeska Pipeline as an Operations Technician before going to work in 1979 for the Mining and Petroleum Training service for the University of Alaska, where she worked for 34 years. Debbie was in charge of implementing the new federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) State Grants program assuming authority for all MSHA training in Alaska. She managed the MSHA program from an initial enrollment of 107 students which grew to 2,600 statewide. During her tenure as the University’s MSHA training administrator, she became the first woman to become fully certified as an MSHA instructor in both surface and underground mining. She was the first woman elected to chair the National Safety Council’s Mining Division and during her chairmanship organized and won the highest NSC award; the Diamond Cameron Award. This was the first time the Mining Division won that award. She spent over two years training at the National Mine Safety Academy
on both business and training management to the MSHA standards. She was recognized by Assistant Undersecretary for MSHA Jeff Duncan for her 30 years exemplary service to MSHA and the Alaska mining community. She organized and participated in mine safety training not only
