FAIRBANKS — Kinross Fort Knox, Usibelli Coal Mine, and Northern Star Resources’ Pogo Mine have announced a partnership to bolster mental health resources in interior Alaska. Each partner mine will be contributing $15,000 annually for three years, totaling $135,000, towards funding an executive director position to staff the Fairbanks Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Nenette Rogers was named the Fairbanks NAMI Executive Director in mid-June and will be the face of the organization in Fairbanks. These funds will allow her to focus on pursuing grants, recruiting donation dollars, and provide time for her to expand NAMI’s reach and treatment in Interior Alaska. Kinross proposed the initial partnership after a discussion with state NAMI leadership, which led to a collaboration with the two neighboring mines. “Kinross approached NAMI last year to ask if they could expand their reach and impact if they had more support, and their response was a resounding yes,” said Anna Atchison, External Affairs Manager, Kinross Alaska. “We are very happy that our two other local mines were equally excited to collaborate to address this important issue in Interior Alaska.” Health and safety are core values that each of the mines uphold and share. “When it comes to our employees, it’s just as important to have resources available that support their emotional

well-being as it is to having the right personal protective equipment on-site to physically keep them out of harms’ way,” said Lisa Herbert, Vice President of Public Relations for Usibelli Coal Mine. “Today, as always, we are standing together so that all people affected by mental illness may live healthy, fulfilling lives supported by a community that cares,” said Nenette Rogers, Executive Director, NAMI Fairbanks. “We are very grateful to Kinross Fort Knox, Northern Star Resources’ Pogo Mine, Usibelli Coal Mine and the Usibelli Foundation for their collaboration to provide generous and long-term support to assist NAMI Fairbanks in providing peer support, education, and advocacy to the greater Fairbanks community.” Support of NAMI’s mission is becoming increasingly important as the nation saw a rising need for mental health care and resources during the 2020 pandemic. “Like many other businesses in our community, finding ways to support mental health initiatives have been at the forefront of discussions at Pogo,” said Wendie MacNaughton, external affairs manager for Northern Star Resources Limited. “We look forward to seeing how NAMI Fairbanks can expand the support they’ve been providing to those in crisis.” Kinross Fort Knox, Usibelli Coal Mine, and Northern Star Resources were pleased to help implement this next step in addressing mental health in the local community.
