JUNE-JULY 2025 | JTNZ | BAM SOUTH

Building for the South’s Future — Sustainability Where It Matters Most The South has always been a land of resilience. From the Mississippi River’s fertile banks to Florida’s hurricane-tested coasts, from Texas ranchlands to the Appalachian foothills, the region has stood tall through storms, heat, and the relentless march of change. But in 2025, the South faces a challenge unlike any before: how to build not just for today, but for a future where sustainability isn’t optional — it’s survival.

The Southern United States is growing faster than almost any other region. Florida alone adds nearly 1,000 new residents every day, and Texas has added more than 9 million people in the past two decades. Cities like Atlanta, Nashville, and Orlando are booming, bringing unprecedented demand for housing, infrastructure, and commercial spaces.

But with growth comes risk. Rising sea levels threaten Florida’s coastlines.

Increasing hurricane intensity pushes Louisiana, Alabama, and the Carolinas to rethink resiliency. Prolonged heatwaves are stressing Texas’ power grid. And inland flooding in Tennessee and Kentucky has reached levels once thought impossible.
