Within three months, she left nursing entirely.
Today, the company’s work spans paving, curbing and DOT projects , but Matthews still measures the business against something more personal than volume. Her grandfather’s death clarified what the family legacy actually meant. “When he passed, so many leaders in the industry… came to me and told me stories,” she recalls. “My grandfather always helped people. He always had other people’s backs.” Both her grandfather and father practiced what she calls “muddy boots leadership.” “They’ve never been afraid of doing the work it takes to get the project done.”
