Metsä Board Develops Lighter Yet Strong Gift Packaging Solution Espoo, Finland based Metsä Board announced the de- velopment of a lighter gift package that has strength fea- tures close to those of current rigid box solutions. The new packaging solution is the result of work produced at the Excellence Centre, which provides a functional setting for co-creation workshops, where its packaging design team works to improve current packaging or to create new solu- tions, based on the needs of the customer. The characteristics of the new packaging solution are based on microflute corrugated board. It consists of a sep- arate base and lid and its surface liner can be uncoated white kraftliner, or coated white kraftliner. The packaging solution is designed to be suitable for mass production on current production lines.

According to Metsä Board’s Packaging Services Direc- tor Ilkka Harju, the new gift packaging solution is especial- ly suitable for cosmetics, chocolate, beverages and other premium products. “The current rigid box gift packages are largely manufactured in Asia, but with our new micro-flute solution, we can offer locally produced, high-quality pack- aging to the European market,” said Harju. “Thanks to its lightness, our new packaging solution helps our customers reduce the carbon footprint of their products. Since no harmful adhesives or other plastic lam- inates are used in the packaging solution, its recycling is even more efficient.” Metsä Board also has a team of sustainability special- ists helping customers compare packaging materials and designs, calculate emissions caused by the packaging and find solutions for lower environmental impacts. The sus- tainability team compared the micro-flute solution to recy- cled fibre-based rigid box solutions used in gift packaging and found it to be up to 50 percent lighter in weight. “Via the workshops we get an important perspective into the evolution of packaging,” Harju said. “When the volumes are big, even a small modification to package de- sign can make a big difference.”
