Each November at AMA’s convention, History Night is dedicated to honoring pioneers of the state’s mining legacy. On History Night Nov. 5, the Alaska Mining Hall of Fame Foundation will honor the accomplishments of the United States Bureau of Mines {USBM}, which conducted much valuable work in Alaska from 1910 to 1995, when they were disbanded by Congress. Besides initiating health and safety reforms for miners, the USBM conducted commodity studies, including for strategic minerals, industrial mineral studies, prospector assistance, coal field develop- ments, and specific mining district reviews. Some work during the heated D-2 debates were import- ant, which included a review of mineralization at Red Dog Creek. Three men, Tom Pittman, Donald Blasko, and John Mulligan made fundamental contributions to the
