poral needs. Our Lord answers by show ing that physical bread is not the real source of life, but rather the Word of God (v. 4). He would rely upon God the Father to supply His needs according to His promise, rather than take the matter into His own hands and rush ahead of the Father. This is always the wisest course of action. Next, the devil attempted to get the Saviour to stoop to extremism and cheap showmanship, thus discrediting Himself in the eyes of men. Radicalism of any kind is not pleasing to God who does all things decently and in order. When his first two attempts failed Satan tried to tempt Christ with an offer to easy world power (w . 8, 9). There is, however, no way to detour the Cross, either for Christ or for those who follow Him. As Spurgeon said, “ No cross, no crown; no sweat, no sweet; no conflict no conquest!” Study the passages that deal with this thought—Matt. 16:21-27; Mark 8:34-38; Luke 14:25-35; Gal. 6:14. Our Lord Used the Scriptures In Public Worship Luke 4:16-22 Read this paragraph carefully. Note that the Word of God was given the

central place in the worship of the peo ple. The synagogue became the model of the later Christian Church, and much the same order of service was followed. This order of service gave the chief place to the Word of God. This is as it should be. Our Lord constantly based His teach ing upon the Scriptures. Read through the book of Acts and you will find that the Apostles did the same in their teach ing and preaching. One of the reasons for the tremendous spiritual power of the apostolic church was its faithfulness to the Word of God (Acts 2:42). In subsequent decades the leaders of the church substituted ritual for Revela tion and the dark centuries of pagan superstition followed. Not until the Prot estant Reformation of the 16th century was the Bible given back to the people. With the restoration of the Bible came holiness of life and a great surge of missionary activity which has not less ened from that day to this. In the 20th century, however, we find the trend back to ritualism and formal ism increasing in the church, with the resultant minimizing of the Word of God. Bible-believing Christians ought to fight this movement in their own churches. They ought to instruct their pastor to preach and teach the Word of God, and to keep the Bible central in all the services of the church. Our Lord Used the Scriptures to Call Attention to Himself Luke 24:27 Christ is the altogether lovely One, and the only Saviour of the world. It is no wonder, then, that He gently and patiently called the attention of His dis ciples to what the Bible teaches about Himself. This incident is most instructive. For one thing, His action recorded in this verse teaches us that Jesus Christ is the key to the Scriptures, and its central figure. No man can rightly un derstand the Word of God who does not see Christ from Genesis to Revelation. The entire Old Testament was used by the Saviour in this discourse, for Moses and the psalms and the prophets in cluded all the 39 books of the Old Tes tament. This incident also teaches us that the Old Testament is also the inspired, au thoritative Word of God. Some people minimize the importance of the Old Tes tament, but it is the foundation of the New Testament. Together the 66 books of the Bible constitute a marvelous unity. Because our Lord set His mark of ap proval on the Old Testament, we must do the same. Notice that our Lord expounded to His disciples the Word of God. How wonder ful is this! Possibly the greatest weak ness of the contemporary church is the lack of Bible exposition, which ought to be the chief ambition of every pastor and teacher of the Word. Let us have less of what other men say about the Bible, and more of the Word of God itself.
