Testimony to Israe l By the Jewish M issionary

I N this column each month we seek to recount for our readers some details of the Lord’s working in and through the Jewish Department of the Bible In stitute of Los Angeles, Daniel Rose, Di rector. We trust this will stimulate prayer for our missionaries and those whom they contact in personal witness. We cannot give actual names, but our Lord knows the individuals and will fit your prayers to their needs. This month, through the account of one of the mis sionaries of the Jewish Department, we have our attention turned for prayer to two young boys. * * * The children’s work is well started again, and we are rejoicing especially that the Lord has given us wisdom in dealing with delinquent, unmanageable boys. In our class one such boy has con sistently disturbed the lesson period. One day, recently, I stopped in the middle of the object lesson and said: “ Sam, do you know if you would accept the Lord Jesus as your Saviour, you wouldn’t want to disturb this story about Him. You would be glad to be quiet and help others to listen, just as easily as you now like to disturb and cause trouble.” He was startled, as was the whole class, I think. A variety of expressions were mirrored on Sam’s face in the next few moments, and I glimpsed through them all something of the conflict in his heart and his desire to feel important— so much so that he was willing to be a disturbance to achieve his goal. Acting on what- some would call impulse but

which I felt was the leading of the Lord, I asked him if he would like to try to keep order in the class from now on rather than being a disturbance. If so, he could be an “ officer”, and have the authority to keep order. Disbelief gave place to joy as he solemnly accepted this responsibility. From that time on we were able to conduct the class with much less disturbance. And one memorable day, Sam consented to let us pray for him. Much prayer may be needed for this lonely lad before he comes through to thé joy of knowing our blessed Lord Jesus as his own personal Saviour. But we believe he will come. Who will pray for Sam? On another day, as we were returning from the children’s class, we passed a newsboy. I had been singing softly to myself, one of my favorite hymns. “You must be pretty happy,” the newsboy remarked. “ Do you know why?” I countered quickly. Then, as he shook his head, I began to tell him the glad story of sal vation. He listened' with rapt attention, his papers forgotten. And when the in vitation was given to him to accept the Lord Jesus as his Saviour, he made ready response. “ I know I’m a sinner,” he said, “ and I do want to be better.” There, on a Los Angeles street corner, with the snarl of traffic a background that had no power to disturb at that moment, we bowed our heads in prayer. After I had prayed for him, he asked God to forgive him his sins and took the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Sa viour. Even as he finished praying, his hand went to his back pocket and as he raised his head, he held out a golf ball for me to see. “I stole this a few minutes ago from that store across the street,” he admit ted with a flush. “ I must run back to return it, now.” And off he went. How wonderful, I thought, that the Holy Spirit of God can convict young hearts as well as older hearts. I knew the transaction was real with him when he came running back and said, “ I feel better now, and from now on, I want God to keep me from doing sinful things.” A little Los Angeles newsboy, now a member of God’s household, but still subjected to all the roughness and temptation of a newsboy’s life, will need your prayers as he seeks to walk in His ways. He Knows Best The Lord’s answers to prayer are in finitely perfect, and eternity will show that often when we were asking for a stone that looked like bread, He was giving us bread that to our shortsighted ness looked like stone. — Selected.
