Come, Ye Thankful People, Come Come, ye thankful people, come, Raise the song of harvest home: All is safely gathered in, Ere the winter storms begin; God, our Maker doth provide For our wants to be supplied: Come to God’s own temple, come Raise the song of harvest-home. All the world is God’s own field, Fruit unto His praise to yield; Wheat and tares together sown, Unto joy or sorrow grown; First the blade, and then the ear, Then the full corn shall appear: Lord of harvest, grant that we Wholesome grain, and pure, may be. For the Lord our God shall come, And shall take His harvest home; From His field shall in that day All offenses purge away; Give His angels charge at last In the fire the tares to cast; But the fruitful ears to store In His garner evermore. Even so, Lord, quickly come To Thy final harvest-home; Gather Thou Thy people in, Free from sorrow, free from sin; Come, with all Thine angels, come, Raise the glorious harvest-home. —Henry Alford. Wanted: Jeremiahs! Why are there so few Jeremiahs today —men who are not chocolate soldiers but who, like Daniel’s three friends, are wil ling to go through the fire with God, “men of God with brows of brass and nerves of iron, and hearts bit \?ith the love of Jesus?” We ourselves (the local church and individual believers) are at fault. We are dodging responsibility in the matter of our personal testimony for the Lord Jesus Christ. Two things are required for a true testimony: We must have God’s mes sage. So John declares “this is the mes sage which we have heard of him” (1 John 1:5). We must be witnesses. God’s message must have us. Not only do we need to lay hold of the truth—the truth must lay hold of us. The Apostle writes, “the life was manifested, and we . . . bear witness” (1 John 1:2). Where there is only the message, the testimony becomes mechanical and im personal; where there is only a witness, the testimony becomes superficial and impotent; hut where God’s truth is al lowed to transform and flow through human personality, the testimony to our Lord becomes supernatural and effectual. Jeremiahs are produced when a man is set on fire by the truth so that he cannot but speak the things he has experienced (cf. Acts 4:20). —John E. Boehmer.
