the death of the Saviour who lay down His life a ransom for many. What gifts of appreciation are you offering to Jesus? Effect of His Birth v. 12 This is suggested in the phrase, “they departed into their own country another way.” Those who come to know Christ intimately never walk the same way again. They exemplify a renewed life. (See 2 Cor. 5:17.) They separate them selves from the Herods and indifferent crowds of life. (See 2 Cor. 6:17.) Which way are you walking today? In the same old way that leads to futility and death, or in the new way that leads to victory and life? Memory Verse: “ I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart” (Psalm 86:12a). Did you have a happy Christmas? Why? Was it because you received all of the gifts that you had wanted, or was it because you gave a gift to the Lord Jesus whose birthday you were celebrating? Perhaps you gave a gift to someone whom you knew could not give anything to you. Perhaps you made Christmas a happy day for someone who was poor, or sick, or old. When the Lord Jesus was between one and two years old, some wise men came from the east to Jerusalem to find God’s Son that they might worship Him and bring Him gifts. Story books and pictures show us three wise men, but there may have been two of them or there may have been a large number of them. God does not tell us how many wise men there were. These men had seen a new star in the heavens which was a sign to them that a King had been born. They went to the wicked ruler Herod to find out where the new King could be found. Herod was troubled when he heard that another King had been born. He feared that this King might take the throne from him. When Herod asked the religious leaders about the new King, they found the Old Testa ment Scripture that prophesied (told before it happened) that Jesus would be born in Bethlehem. Herod told the wise men to go and find the King and then return to tell him where the child was that he too might worship. Really Herod planned to kill this new King if he could find Him! The star led the wise men to the house (notice that it was not the manger!) where Jesus was. They came into the house and worshiped Jesus as they gave their gifts to Him. God warned them in a dream to not return to Herod, but to go home another road. Have you taken time this past week to worship God with your whole heart and to thank Him for the gift of His Son? If not, will you today give Him praise for His wonderful Gift, and pray that you may give to Him daily your gifts of love, service, money, and tal ents? Helps for the Children Gifts of the Wise Men Matthew 2:1-12
