Harrell's Employee-Owner Newsletter Fall Edition

Inspiring Legacy

The Harrell Legacy Continues By: Mike Hess

More recently, Jack and Tina Harrell partnered with Lakeland Regional Health to donate the Harrell Family Center for Behavioral Wellness. Jack and Tina recognized the need in their community for more people to have access to state-of-the-art health care, and to erase the stigma surrounding mental illness by helping more people to be treated. The center is set to support the needs of Polk County and its surrounding areas for many years to come. Jack was widely known in the industry as a selfless person with both the resolve and the drive to make things happen. He achieved many remarkable things in his time, too many for one list, but here are a few notable accomplishments: - On September 30th, 2016, Jack, along with former Harrell’s President Dave Schermerhorn and the other leaders at Harrell’s, announced that the company was now 100% employee owned. This new Employee Stock Ownership Plan (or ESOP) puts Harrell’s into the hands of its employees, granting them a greater connection to the value creation of the company to better provide for their future. - On June 21st, 2019, Jack won the Distinguished Citizen Award from the greater Tampa Bay area Boy Scouts Group. The council presents the Distinguished Citizen Award annually in honor of individuals who represent the values of scouting through their service to the community.

Though we still mourn the loss of Jack Harrell, Jr., we also take time to celebrate his legacy and all that he has done to pave the way for our company and many other endeavors. Jack Jr. always put people first. Whether it was family, business, or day-to-day conversations, he always lived out the core values that Harrell’s was built on; to Serve, Honor, and Glorify God, to Take Care of People, and to Grow Harrell’s Financial Strength. His employees, our customers, and the community saw and benefited from Jack's generosity. Giving back to and supporting his community was a driving force for Jack. He and his wife, Tina, made a conscious effort to act on this drive wherever they could. From supporting the initiatives of the growing Bonnet Springs Park to donating time and resources to various charities in and around Florida, or working with the leadership at Harrell’s to make the company employee- owned, people were always on Jack’s mind.

The Harrell Legacy Continues Following Jack's passing, the Board made the unanimous decision to elect Jack Harrell, III to be our newest CEO and Chairman of the board, following in his father’s footsteps. Jack III has been working at Harrell’s for over 15 years, dedicating his entire career to the company, and is looking forward to leading the charge into the future of Harrell’s. Regarding his new appointment, Jack had this to say, “It is an honor to take on this new leadership role. To be the 4th generation Harrell to lead this company means a great deal to me. Following in the footsteps of my great- grandfather, grandfather, and father is a tall task and one I do not take lightly. It is impossible to replace my father, but I will work every day to honor the legacy and culture he created by doing all the things he taught me and instilled in me. I look forward to continuing to work with our Vice Chairman Dave Schermerhorn as my father did for the last 20 years. It is an incredible honor to get to lead this great team at Harrell's.” Harrell’s Board Member, John Attaway had this to say regarding the appointment, “The Board was very happy to elect Jack Harrell, III as Chairman and CEO of Harrell’s, Inc. at its meeting this week. We have the utmost confidence in Jack and his ability to continue to maintain the traditions and success of his father before him.”

- In August of 2019, Jack Harrell, Jr. received the Florida Turfgrass Association’s Wreath of Grass Award. This award pays tribute to individuals who have shown outstanding service to the Florida Turfgrass Association and to the turfgrass industry as a whole. The 2019 President of the FTGA stated, “Jack has always been at the front and center providing support for any issue that a customer, an employee, an association, or a community may be facing. It is an honor to award Jack for his commitment.” - In May of 2021, the Florida GCSA presented Jack with the Marie Roberts Lifetime Service Award. This award is presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the Florida GCSA and golf industry through participation, support, and achievements in the industry. This award is granted to those who have dedicated their life to the industry. - In May of 2021, Jack Harrell Jr. was inducted into the Tampa Bay Business Hall of Fame. The event celebrates those who are seen as visionaries in their field and celebrates the accomplishments, leadership, and service of the honorees. This ceremony celebrated both the 2020 and 2021 induction classes, of which. Jack was a member of the 2020 class. “We rejoice that he has gone home to Glory and is not in any more pain and suffering any longer. His body had been restored, and he is at peace. My father was a great man who took care of so many people. Everyone else was always his main concern, rather than himself. We will all miss him but are so happy that he is rejoicing in Heaven.” – Jack Harrell III

We are excited to have Jack Harrell, III as our CEO and Chairman of the Board, and look forward to what he will accomplish in his new role.

Give Your Lawn's Soil a Boost By: Raymond Snyder A successful lawn, landscape, or garden is dependent on several factors that are fundamentally important such as sunlight, shade, soil, and water. But

there are also agronomic input factors like fertilizer, pest management, and irrigation use that are arguably just as vital to seeing your lawn, landscape or garden thrive. Organic matter is one potential input that is easily overlooked and can make a dramatic difference in plant performance by its effect on soil productivity. In this article, we will explore the use of organic matter and how utilizing it in tandem with your applied fertilizer (such as POLYON® controlled- release fertilizer) can dramatically improve overall growth and plant health. Organic matter imparts many beneficial agronomic characteristics in the soil such as cation exchange capacity, water retention, and soil microbiology. A cation exchange capacity is the mechanism by which positively charged nutrients are retained in the soil, making it more effective at holding nutrients in the soil and less likely to lose them to leaching. Organic matter is an excellent retainer of water which helps promote plant available water and minimize undesirable drought stress, keeping your plants healthy and preventing disease. Finally, organic matter is a home for beneficial soil microbiology and those microorganisms facilitate desirable nutrient cycling.

Organic matter sources are not necessarily all the same. Organic matter properties are determined by the sources from which they are derived, for example, peat-type organic matter such as sphagnum peat has an inherently acidic pH value. Peat is an ideal organic matter input when amending high-pH soils. Compost is another example, often derived from various, non-specific plant residues that have been microbially and thermally aged for several months. Organic matter derived from compost has a more neutral pH value and is ideal for amending acidic and mildly alkaline soil. Regardless of the organic matter source, it is important to select one that has a carbon-to-nitrogen value of 24:1 and is free of weeds and pathogens. Once an organic matter source is identified and purchased, it is now time to amend the soil. Increasing soil organic matter content by 1% in the top six inches of rootzone can be achieved by adding approximately 454 lb. of organic matter and mixing it thoroughly into the top six inches. Repeat 1% additions until the soil is at least 2% organic matter and up to 10% for landscapes and gardens. The greatest benefit of adding organic matter to most root zones will occur when the top six inches are amended. In summary, organic matter inputs can dramatically increase the productivity of a landscape and garden. Choose an organic matter source that imparts beneficial characteristics in your soil based on soil-test results. Finally, incorporate organic matter throughout the effective rootzone to maximize organic matter amended soil. To learn more about organic matter sources, how it can benefit you, and any other tips you may need, feel free to reach out!
