Donlin passes another key milestone

The Alaska Department of Natural Resources has approved the right-of-way for Donlin Mine key gas pipeline which will power the future mine northeast of Bethel. The right of way is a key next step for the po- tentially huge gold mine. The Department of Natural Resources will lease the right of way for 30 years, about the same term as the expected lifetime of the gold mine. The pipeline would begin near Cook Inlet and stretch more than 300 miles through the Alas- ka Range, ending near Crooked Creek. The pipeline will provide an environmentally safe way to transport natural gas to power a 220 megawatt power plant that will provide elec- tricity for the mine.

Donlin has received a right-of-way permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the pipe- line. In January, it received state permits to create an airstrip and port, as well as installing fiber optic cable for communications. These are the latest in a series of many permits the project must receive before opening what would be one of the largest gold mines in the world. It is expected to employ thousands of workers both during construction and opera- tion.
