homage to Haman, and a decree was drafted by the king to obliter ate the Jews. Esther is used to intervene (7:1- 7) with a banquet which she has planned very carefully. During this time she is given the opportunity to ask a petition. She requests sim ply her life, as well as the lives of her people. This is the first time that Ahasuerus learns of what Ha man had in mind with his pressure and money for the execution de cree. Haman, the prime minister, is pointed out as the guilty party. He pleads for his life, all to no avail. The gallows which he had made for Mordecai, was used to bring his own death. Only then was the king's anger pacified. Again, the devil's plan, in the con flict of the ages, was nullified. The gallows was actually a pole which had a sharp end on it. The victim was actually impaled through the legs in a very painful and agon izing manner. The more the in dividual struggled, the more the pointed end would imbed itself in the body. It was a terrible means of execution at best. Haman, you see, had prepared it for the Jews and at the suggestions of his own wife. A new decree was issued and sent out to all the provinces. The messengers rode the swiftest horses they could find. The Jews were spared and allowed the priv ilege of banding together, carry ing arms, and under strict disci pline so that they might be saved. The victory of the Jews was over whelming. The joy of Israel was boundless. Even main Shushan, the city itself, rejoiced over the death of Haman, the wicked prime min ister, and with his equally evil sons. How very complete was the down fall of the devil.
