Patient of the Month Dogs (and cats) are family too… That’s how our Certified Prosthetist Orthotist (CPO), Sara, felt when it came to her 8-year-old dog, Doc. Doc injured his right knee on his back leg while running and exploring the woods at home. Doc began limping, not wanting to chase balls or play outside. After speaking with his veterinarian, it was determined that Doc most likely had injured his cranial cruciate ligament (CCL). The CCL is similar to a human’s anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). It holds the tibia in place and prevents internal rotation and hyperextension of the knee. While Sara’s background is in orthotics and prosthetics and working with human patients, she knew she could help Doc get back to running and playing comfortably again. Sara made Doc a stifle knee brace in order to help support his knee while his CCL healed. Doc began using his knee brace and was able to get back to running wild. A happy ending for Doc and his CPO mom, Sara.
