In fact, 73 percent of all paper-based pack- aging in the United States is recycled, and 88 percent of cardboard is recycled, according to the most recent data available from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Consumer attitudes toward plastic are clear, with 57 percent of respondents indicating they are actively tak- ing steps to reduce their use of plastic packaging. While consumers believe plastic packaging is the second-most recycled after paper/cardboard packaging, most respon- dents significantly overestimate the plastic packaging recycling rate, believing it to be between two and more than five times greater than the actual rate of 13 percent. Metal packaging is perceived to have the third highest recycling rate and glass packaging comes in fourth. With latest available figures showing actual recycling rates of 73 percent and 34 percent, respectively, the level of re- cycling for these packaging materials also is widely mis- judged. The survey also found that consumers across the Unit- ed States are willing to change their behavior to shop more sustainably. Nearly 4 in 10 (38 percent) are willing to spend more on a product if it is packaged using sustain- able materials, and more than a third (36 percent) said they would consider avoiding a retailer who is not taking steps to reduce their use of non-recyclable packaging. “Awareness of sustainable packaging choices is be- coming a driving force in consumer purchasing deci- sions, which in turn is influencing businesses to rethink their packaging strategies, particularly in the retail sec- tor,” Riebel says. “The culture of make, use and dispose is gradually changing.” Visit https://twosidesna.org/survey to see the report. DS Smith Appoints Gerritsen New Managing Director For Recycling Atlanta, Georgia based DS Smith has announced the ap- pointment of Rogier Gerritsen as Managing Director of its Recycling Division – managing about six million tons of pa- per for recycling annually at company plants and those of its partners in the United States and internationally. DS Smith recently expanded its recycling opera- tions with the opening of its first U.S. recycling facility in Reading, Pennsylvania. The plant can recycle more than 36,000 tons of old corrugated cardboard each year and is unique as it is alongside the company’s paper mill and within a mile from its packaging plant, creating a closed loop manufacturing model. The process allows for corru- gated packaging to be made, used, collected and recy- cled into corrugated boxes again within just 14 days.
