INTERPRETING A FERTILIZER LABEL
DEFINITIONS
SIZE GUIDE NUMBER (SGN) Describes the average size of fertilizer granules in a fertilizer blend. SGN of a fertilizer blend is equal to the average diameter of individual fertilizer granules in millimeters multiplied by 100. + SGN >200: Referred to as reg, granular, rough, or lawn grade fertilizer. Often a more economical option, fertilizer blends with larger SGN values should not be applied to turf maintained at less than a 0.5” mowing height and will have fewer fertilizer granules per square foot compared to fertilizer blends with a smaller SGN. + SGN 100 – 200: Referred to a mini grade. Mini grade fertilizer blends provide a greater number of fertilizer granules per square foot compared to granular grade blends and are appropriate for application to turf maintained between 0.25” and 0.50”. + SGN <100: Referred to as micro or greens grade. Micro grade fertilizer blends are appropriate for applications to turf maintained at <0.25” and provide the maximum number of fertilizer granules per square foot.
