San Francisco skyline
It might be a cliché to call California the Golden State, but the weather, the beaches and the wine certainly add up to our top three golden hues. Add in the quirkiness of San Francisco plus the glamour of LA and you’ve some pretty compelling reasons to explore this particular state. Drive inland and you’ll discover the jaw-dropping Grand Canyon, the vistas of Death Valley and the unashamed fun of Las Vegas. Mix in the deserts of Arizona and the result is a perfect road trip. A look into Santa Monica’s charming lifestyle
Cycling the Marvin Braude Bike Trail in Santa Monica
“I spent a wonderful Sunday strolling around Santa Monica, through Pallisades Park overlooking the ocean and then onto the pier for an obligatory selfie by the “Route 66 End of the Trail” sign and to enjoy the retro amusements. Then we walked along the beautiful sandy beach until the shops of Santa Monica Place beckoned – a lovely outdoor mall with plenty of places to stop for coffee, ice- cream or a chilled glass of Californian white”. Family fun in Florida
The Grove Resort & Spa
We recommend: The Grove Resort & Spa Orlando 7 Nights Self-Catering from £569pp Save up to £480 per family. Book by 31 Jan 20
Our web manager, Rachel, went on holiday to Florida with her husband and two daughters aged 10 and 8. Here’s what she has to say about their trip.
We had an amazing family holiday to Florida staying at the Grove Resort & Spa. This was a great base for Orlando because it was apartment style accommodation within a lovely hotel resort with lots of facilities, including an amazing water park which the kids loved. Our 3-bedroom apartment was huge with a full-size kitchen (plus a very handy laundry). It can be quite expensive to go out for three meals a day - plus all the snacks, drinks and ice creams young kids demand! So it was great that we could prepare
packed lunches and easy meals, or just chill out with a takeaway and a bottle of wine when we returned (absolutely shattered!) from the parks. There was a free shuttle bus service to the Disney parks, which we used. But if the timings didn’t suit then sometimes we drove or got an Uber. After nine nights at the Grove we then drove to Clearwater to chill on the beach for five nights, which was the perfect relaxing end to a fun packed time in Florida.

Embark on an epic Rocky Mountaineer journey
Rocky Mountaineer travelling past Mount Robson
Jenn O’Neill is one of our North America Specialists and enjoyed a tour of western Canada earlier this year, including a two day Rocky Mountaineer rail journey: “It’s hard to choose the best part of a Rocky Mountaineer journey but in early May the trip from Kamloops to Banff was an amazing day. There were phenomenal views through the Hoodoos and up through the Columbia Valley, especially climbing up to the Continental Divide and down into a snowy Banff. It wasn’t just the sights that were amazing, the food was so good that I ate way too much, but I just couldn’t help myself! Travelling on a Rocky Mountaineer train is such a fantastic way to travel from Vancouver into the Rockies (or the other way around), as you can literally sit back and enjoy the view, whilst listening to the entertaining and interesting commentary from the onboard team.”

Discover amazing Alberta
Cheryl Cleworth from our North America team visited Alberta in September: “A recent trip to the Canadian province of Alberta lived up to all expectations, including enjoying a foodie tour of Edmonton, exploring Calgary and Heritage Park, and time to treat ourselves in the Nordic Spa at the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge. Arriving into Banff after an early snowfall made this lovely town even more magical, with a fun trip up the gondola. Lake Louise was truly beautiful and because it was early October there were fewer people so we could really enjoy views of this gorgeous lake with its backdrop of snowy mountains.”

Dog Sledding in Alberta
Fat Biking at Maligne Lake
There are fewer more magical places on earth than the Rockies in wintertime, with the snowy peaks forming a beautiful backdrop for pale icy lakes and dark forests. You don’t have to be a skier to take the ski lifts up the mountain, you can board as a pedestrian and enjoy the spectacular views before tucking into lunch at one of the popular mountain top restaurants. Experience a sled-ride around Banff, followed by hot chocolate in a cosy café. Or how about trying out snow shoe-ing, like the early settlers. For a truly unique experience, take a guided hike through the ice pillars and frozen waterfalls of Johnson Canyon. We love Canada in all of its seasons, but winter is perhaps when you discover the true heart of this country.

Polar Bears in Churchill
Our Canada specialists have been lucky enough to see all sorts of wildlife on their travels. Adam loved his boat trip from Vancouver Island, seeing black bears, sealions, seals and eagles. Holly was thrilled to see numerous bears feasting on salmon in September, although the smell of the discarded fish was also memorable! Jade travelled to Churchill to see the polar bears “We travelled onto the Tundra in a specially made truck high enough so that you’re safe whilst getting you close to the bears for fantastic photo opportunities and amazing views”

Journey from Canada’s east to west
The vastness of Canada may be daunting, but it is possible to capture many different parts in one single holiday, encapsulating its contrasting characters. A couple of days in the cities of Montreal and Quebec will introduce you to its French-speaking heart. A visit to Niagara Falls will tick a natural wonder of the world off your list. Venture into a national park and discover the beauty of Banff. Sample poutine (chips topped with gravy and cheese curds), washed down with a Caesar cocktail or wine from Okanagan. It’s easy to see why this is one of our favourite countries.
