Philadelphia’s Crystal Tea Room, the ACE Mentor Pro- gram Eastern Pennsylvania Affiliate presented four awards in recognition of people and projects that demonstrate ACE excellence. Person of the Year Emily Bittenbender , pres- ident and managing partner of Bittenbender Construc- tion, LP , was named Person of the Year for her extensive contributions to Philadelphia and the region’s construction community. first director of Philadelphia’s Capital Program Office, and then managed design and con- struction of the $137 million National Constitution Center, before starting Bittenbender Construction in 2003. It is the only woman-owned, union-
affiliated general contractor in the area. Project of the Year Mitchell and Hilarie Morgan Hall at Temple University was recognized as Project of the Year. The $215 million, LEED Silver or Gold (anticipated)
residential, dining, and retail building has put an indel- ible mark on the university’s campus and the Philadelphia skyline. The complex enhances the student experience as part
of the Temple 20/20 Master- plan to envisage the campus as a community-engaged, pedes- trian-oriented academic and cultural destination. Designed by MGA Partners, Architects, Morgan Hall encompasses 32 floors of residential space in two buildings, 363 residences each with a full bathroom, 53,000 s/f of dining and re- tail with public access, and terraced outdoor areas that accommodate quiet reflection or large, programmed events. Community Leader of the Year Water Commissioner for the City of Philadelphia, Howard M. Neukrug, P.E., B.C.E.E. , was honored as Community Leader of the Year, for his ef- forts to ensure safe, affordable drinking water and provide integrated wastewater and stormwater services to support a healthy and vibrant water- way network. Neukrug serves over 2.3 million people in the greater Philadelphia region. He oversees management of 2,000 employees, an annual operating budget of $700 mil- lion, a $10 billion long-term capital improvement program, and an urban infrastructure system of over 6,000 miles of pipes and six treatment facilities. Outstanding Service Award Anthony Naccarato , P.E., S.E.C.B. , president of O’Donnell & Naccarato structural engineers, was recognized for his outstand- ing service to the ACE East- ern Pennsylvania Affiliate. Naccarato served as board chair of the ACE Mentor Pro- gram Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter from 2003-2013, and remains a member of the national board of directors’ Leadership Council and the National Affiliates Council. Naccarato’s long-term service and commitment to the ACE Mentor Program, coupled with his genuine enthusiasm continued on page 17C
