What is End-Point Assessment? End-Point Assessment (EPA) is the final stage of an apprenticeship. It is an impartial assessment which assesses if an apprentice has developed the skills, knowledge and behaviours that are outlined in the relevant apprenticeship standard. Assessment plans for each standard are designed by a group of professionals within the sector and the EPA is then delivered by independent bodies known as awarding organisations (AOs). It’s important for employers to select an AO as early as possible into the apprenticeship. This is typically done via the apprenticeship training provider, however, ultimately, it is the employer of the apprentice who must make the decision on which AO they engage with. Early engagement will ensure that an apprentice fully understands the assessment criteria and the methods that will be used to carry out the assessment. Once the assessment has been completed, the AO will record the apprenticeships completion, so that a certificate from the Institute for Apprentices and Technical Education (IfATE) can be issued.

All our assessments are built by payroll professionals and relevant to real life workplace situations

We are industry leaders in providing high quality courses and education material to enhance the progression of payroll professionals

All our assessors are experienced payroll professionals that use their in depth knowledge to guide apprentices through assessments

EPA process IPPE will not have direct contact with the apprentice until they have reached gateway. Contact between IPPE and the training provider/employer will begin once IPPE are appointed as the AO. Six months prior to gateway, the training provider will be provided with login details for their apprentices. This will give the apprentice access to IPPE’s learning platform before they reach gateway. Prior access enables the apprentice to become familiar with the assessment plan, the platform they will use during their assessment and have access to practice assessments. In addition, detailed guidance and resources will be available to the apprentice to ensure they are ready and confident to enter the assessment gateway.

Once an apprentice has reached gateway, the EPA team at IPPE will send out a welcome pack to give details of the EPA process and clear clarification on who the apprentices and who the AO is.

Following on from this, clear and continual communication will be made to ensure that everyone involved with the EPA is aware of the expectations.

Multiple Choice Questionnaire

Project Report

Professional Discussion

The second assessment is a project report with project output. This assessment is made up of two components: project with a project output, a question and answer session. The project output will be completed in the form of a report and will be based on organisational payroll administration from start to finish of employment. The apprentice will provide a title and scope which we will sign off to confirm it is suitable for assessment. The apprentice then has 8 weeks to complete the project report. The report will have a word count of 3000 words and include an executive summary, overview of the workplace, project outcomes and conclusions, evidence of manual calculations, relevant supporting data and populated payslips. The questions and answer session is conducted via Microsoft Teams with an assessor and will last for twenty minutes. The assessor will ask at least four questions relating to the project report.

The final assessment is a professional discussion in which the learner will have a structured discussion with their assessor. The apprentice will provide a portfolio of evidence at gateway. This is compiled of 15 pieces of evidence that are mapped against the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) for the assessor to review. The assessor will ask at least five questions to enable the apprentice to demonstrate their understanding of the KSBs required with this qualification. This assessment will be carried out via a Microsoft Teams call between the apprentice and assessor. It is an open book assessment and the apprentice should have their portfolio with them to refer to. The discussion will last for one hour starting from when the first question is asked with a 10% tolerance, follow up questions may be asked for clarification.

The first assessment is a multiple choice question test. There will be 50 questions to answer in a two hour timeframe. This assessment will be carried out at the workplace and we will use remote proctoring software to invigilate. It is an open book assessment. Each question has four potential answers to choose from. Each correct answer is worth 1 mark. The assessment is marked and moderated by IPP Education to ensure all results are correct. The knowledge elements assessed by this method are tax year related and will reflect the legislation, rates and thresholds appropriate to the date on which the test is taken.

Assessment timeline

We look to move every apprentice through the assessment process as swiftly as possible.

Failed EPA assessment methods must be re-sat or re-taken within a six month period from the overall grade being sent out, otherwise the entire EPA will need to be re-sat. This is at the discretion of the employer.
