What is End-Point Assessment? End-Point Assessment (EPA) is the final stage of an apprenticeship. It is an impartial assessment which assesses if an apprentice has developed the skills, knowledge and behaviours that are outlined in the relevant apprenticeship standard. Assessment plans for each standard are designed by a group of professionals within the sector and the EPA is then delivered by independent bodies known as awarding organisations (AOs). It’s important for employers to select an AO as early as possible into the apprenticeship. This is typically done via the apprenticeship training provider, however, ultimately, it is the employer of the apprentice who must make the decision on which AO they engage with. Early engagement will ensure that an apprentice fully understands the assessment criteria and the methods that will be used to carry out the assessment. Once the assessment has been completed, the AO will record the apprenticeships completion, so that a certificate from the Institute for Apprentices and Technical Education (IfATE) can be issued.

All our assessments are built by payroll professionals and relevant to real life workplace situations

We are industry leaders in providing high quality courses and education material to enhance the progression of payroll professionals

All our assessors are experienced payroll professionals that use their in depth knowledge to guide apprentices through assessments

For any queries please email epa@ippeducation.co.uk or call 0121 712 1003

EPA process IPPE will not have direct contact with the apprentice until they have reached gateway. Contact between IPPE and the training provider/employer will begin once IPPE are appointed as the AO. Six months prior to gateway, the training provider will be provided with login details for their apprentices. This will give the apprentice access to IPPE’s learning platform before they reach gateway. Prior access enables the apprentice to become familiar with the assessment plan, the platform they will use during their assessment and have access to practice assessments. In addition, detailed guidance and resources will be available to the apprentice to ensure they are ready and confident to enter the assessment gateway.

Once an apprentice has reached gateway, the EPA team at IPPE will send out a welcome pack to give details of the EPA process and clear clarification on who the apprentices and who the AO is.

Following on from this, clear and continual communication will be made to ensure that everyone involved with the EPA is aware of the expectations.

Assessments Assessments must be carried out in this order. The learner will not be permitted to move on to the next assessment until the previous one has been completed with a satisfactory score.

All three assessments must be completed within 3 months of entering gateway.

Multiple Choice Questionnaire

Role Simulation

Professional Discussion

The second assessment is a role simulation in which the learner will be required to apply their payroll knowledge to different working environments. There are three hours allowed to complete this plus up to three breaks of one hour each which would give a potential six hours total to complete. No research can be carried out in these breaks This assessment will be carried out at the apprentices workplace and we will use remote proctoring software as well as a workplace invigilator. This is an open book assessment and so materials may be used to refer to. Access is allowed to any necessary online help during the assessment except for social media. The apprentice cannot continue onto the next assessment until they have passed the role simulation assessment. If they fail then two re-sits are permitted.

The first assessment is a multiple choice question test. There will be 50 questions to answer in a two hour timeframe and this examination will be invigilated by the employer. This assessment will be carried out at the workplace and we will use remote proctoring software as well as a workplace invigilator. It is a closed book assessment. The questions will be equally weighted between Payroll (core) and Payroll (pensions). Each correct answer is worth 1 mark. The assessment is marked and moderated by IPP Education to ensure all results are correct. Results are sent out within 5 working days. The apprentice cannot continue onto the next assessment until they have passed the multiple choice test. If they fail then two re-sits are permitted.

The final assessment is a professional discussion in which the learner will have a structured discussion with their assessor. The assessor will incorporate 14 questions to enable the learner to demonstrate their understanding of the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) required with this qualification. The discussion will last for one hour. This assessment will be carried out via a Microsoft Teams call between the apprentice and assessor. It is an open book assessment and the apprentice may have materials with them to refer to. The discussion will last for one hour starting from when the first question is asked with a 10% tolerance. The apprentice cannot complete their course until they have passed the professional discussion. If they fail then two re-sits are permitted.

Course complete

Gateway is restricted to a 3 month timeframe and each individual re-sit could set the learner back by a minimum of 8 days. This is why we aim to schedule each assessment for as soon as possible - to ensure every learner has the greatest possibility of passing the course within the allocated 3 months.

However, we will always follow the lead of the apprentice and what suits them, to ensure everyone feels as prepared and confident as possible.

If the apprentice does not pass all three assessments within 3 months, they must start the full gateway process again and re-sit all assessments, even those they had passed.
