Sara Baxter and her sons, 13-year-old Declan, 12-year-old Owen, and 6-year- old Saemus, believe that Christmas spirit is about family and giving.
Christmas means. For these kids from Chute- à-Blondeau, it does in fact mean a little bit more. “Christmas is about being with family and respecting other people,” said 6-year-old Saemus Baxter. “For me, Christmas spirit is about spending time with your family and having fun,” expressed 12-year-old Owen Farrell. “I believe that it is about spending time with your family and remembering the birth of Jesus Christ,” added 13-year-old Declan Farrell. For some, Christmas is about reaching out and helping others. “Christmas spirit to me is that intangible feeling of community and, with it, comes the urge to reach out and connect with people,” said Jodie Densmore, executive director of United Way/Centraide
Hawkesbury. “I wish we could build our community up in such a way that we all treat each other like it’s Christmas all year round.” Christmas brings a flood of memories and goodwill to most people. “Christmas spirit has shifted in meaning slowly over the years as I age, from more is better to less is better,” said Janice McConnell of Hawkesbury. “It is a time of gratitude for all I have and when focus is on my fellows. Who is alone? Who needs a meal? I tend to be more outgoing in my daily interactions with people. Wishing a Merry Christmas to a passerby is so enriching to me and my hope yearly is that I can sustain my goodwill and intentions going forward. Merry Christmas to all!” - Diane Hunter
