The 3rd Annual Inspire: Celebrating Women’s Leadership Awards Ceremony took place on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at Boulder Flatts in Grand Island, Nebraska. This esteemed event honors exceptional women across eight distinct categories, recognizing their remarkable professional accomplishments and unwavering commitment to enhancing the Grand Island community. The Inspire Awards spotlight women who have demonstrated outstanding achievements, not only in their careers but also as influential leaders and role models. Originating from diverse industries and backgrounds, these honorees embody qualities such as a resilient self-identity, an unwavering dedication to success, and a track record of extraordinary accomplishments. Their commitment, visionary approach, and exceptional talents position them as trail- blazers in their respective fields. An advisory board, comprising of local business and organizational leaders, meticulously selected three finalists for each category from a pool of public nominations. Among these finalists, one individual
was named the overall winner in each category. Additionally, a single outstanding individual received the prestigious Woman of the Year award, acknowledging her exceptional contributions and leadership. Across every part of her life, Tracy strives to help others live active, meaningful, and fulfilling lives. Whether she’s teaching yoga, tutoring English, or mentoring athletes, her commitment to empowering others is clear. For over 19 years, Tracy has taught chair yoga at the Grand Island YMCA. Her classes are welcoming, supportive, and fun. She’s always finding new ways to help participants improve balance and flexibility, doing so with kindness and humor. She also volunteers as a swim coach with the Grand Island Special Olympics team, encouraging athletes with patience and heart. For over a decade, Tracy has tutored with the Grand Island Literacy Council, helping individuals learn English, prepare for the U.S. Citizenship Exam, and build literacy skills. She creates personalized lessons and celebrates their progress. Her favorite phrase—“we all smile in the same language”—now appears on the Literacy Council’s mural.

Raised on a farm in Dunlap, Iowa, Tracy learned the value of hard work and giving back. After earning her master’s in speech-language pathology from the University of Iowa, she worked in healthcare and schools before focusing on raising her four children and serving the Grand Island community. She and her husband Tom—her biggest cheerleader—have called Grand Island home for over 30 years. They enjoy traveling, local events, and time with family, including their beloved grandson. Tracy’s selfless spirit, collaborative heart, and quiet leadership inspire those around her— qualities that make her a deserving Woman of the Year nominee.
Liz Mayfield is a passionate leader dedicated to fostering thriving communities and reimagining what leadership can look like. Since entering the nonprofit sector in 2014, she has spent the past decade advancing sustainability and growth through strategic leadership and deep community engagement. Liz currently serves as Executive Director of Hope Harbor, where she leads efforts to provide housing and holistic support for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Under her leadership, Hope Harbor has undergone a powerful transformation—including securing an entire city block to expand the shelter’s capacity. Her current focus is the Lighthouse Apartments capital campaign, which will bring 20 units of supportive housing to central Nebraska. Liz was nominated for the Woman of the Year Award in recognition of her unwavering dedication to Hope Harbor’s mission and her relentless pursuit of meaningful change. She is a dedicated and exceptional nonprofit professional whose life’s work centers on uplifting women, children, and vulnerable families. Beyond Hope Harbor, Liz is a tireless advocate for youth and mentorship. She serves on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters and volunteers as a Big. She previously chaired Project Connect for seven years and served five years on the Grand Island Community Youth Council board. A lifelong learner and systems thinker, Liz is a graduate of Leadership Tomorrow, the Nonprofit Excellence Institute, and the T.E.A.M. Building Culture Executive Leadership Program. She brings these insights to her consulting venture, Tether & Torch, helping organizations challenge traditional leadership models and build community-driven change. Liz holds a Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Communication from Doane University and a Master of Public Administration – Nonprofit Management from the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
Tami Smith serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Heartland Health Center (HHC), a role she has held since January 2018. With over two decades of experience in the long-term care industry, Tami brought with her a wealth of knowledge, a strong commitment to values-based leadership, and a dedication to cultivating future leaders. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management and an Associate of Science in Health Information Management. These credentials, paired with her experience, have equipped her to guide HHC through both growth and challenge with steady leadership. Under Tami’s direction, Heartland Health Center has seen major expansion. She led the opening of three new clinic locations—an acute care clinic in Grand Island in 2019, a satellite clinic in Ravenna in 2020, and a long-anticipated

clinic in Hastings in 2024. The Hastings site marks a milestone for HHC, offering medical, behavioral health, and soon, dental services. Notably, during the COVID-19 pandemic, HHC was the only Federally Qualified Health Center in Nebraska to experience growth, a testament to Tami’s resilience and vision. Her leadership is marked by accessibility, strategic thinking, and empathy. Her open-door policy and ability to navigate complex situations have fostered trust and collaboration. She offers not just guidance, but heartfelt support to team members in difficult times. Tami was nominated for the Woman of the Year award for her unwavering service, commitment to expanding healthcare access, and work with non-profits to meet community needs. Her legacy is one of servant leadership, community focus, and the pursuit of excellence in healthcare.

Carolina “Lina” Sutton has been a dedicated member of the Grand Island community for nearly 12 years. With a Bachelor’s degree in Cross-Cultural Communication, Lina brings both professional skill and deep compassion to her role as Operations Director for the Multicultural Coalition—a position she has held for the past six years. In addition to her work at the MC, Lina serves on the leadership team for GI ACT (Area Coalition on Trafficking) and the steering committee for Project Connect, demonstrating her commitment to collaboration, advocacy, and service across multiple spheres of the community. Lina and her husband Scott are the proud parents of five children. Formerly licensed foster parents, they grew their family through legal guardianship—a testament to their heart for others and their belief in providing a safe, loving home. Angela Simdorn is the HR Director at Hornady Manufacturing in Grand Island, bringing nearly 30 years of executive Human Resources experience to her role. A dual- certified HR professional, Angela is committed to both her career and community. She grew up in central Nebraska, attended Centura High School, and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with majors in Human Resources Management and Economics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Angela has been an active member of the Grand Island community for many years, serving on multiple nonprofit boards. She is currently Vice-Chair and a board member for Heartland United Way, as well as a director for State Skills USA, College Park, and the Centura Educational Foundation. Angela was nominated for recognition due to her exceptional ability to connect local businesses with educational institutions, helping better prepare young people for the workforce. Angela and her husband, Jason, have been married for 28 years and live in rural Howard County. Beth Frerichs is the Director of Marketing and Communications at Chief Industries, where she leads the company’s marketing strategies, corporate communications, branding, and customer loyalty programs. With a strong foundation in academic and professional achievements, Beth has established herself as a recognized leader in her field. Beth graduated from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, then pursued a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership Development from Capella University, graduating in 2010. This education deepened her understanding of organizational dynamics and leadership, which she applied throughout her career. In 2015, Beth moved with her family to Grand Island, Nebraska, where she joined Chief Construction & Development to lead their marketing initiatives. Her work in this role quickly earned her the respect of her colleagues and positioned her as a valuable team member. Beth’s professional success is complemented by her community involvement. In 2016, she was named one of Grand Island’s “Top 35 Under 35” by the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce and graduated from Leadership Tomorrow class 32. She is an active member of the American Marketing Association, a Key Communicator for Grand Island Public Schools, and serves on the boards of Goodwill Industries of Greater Nebraska and the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce. In 2019, Chief Industries promoted Beth to Director of Marketing and Communications, where she now oversees all aspects of marketing, corporate communications, and branding, including the company’s customer loyalty programs. Beth is known for her strategic vision, integrity, and dedication to both her profession and her community. Her leadership fosters strong relationships and drives positive change within her organization and beyond.
Janine Williams is the HR Manager at Hornady Manufacturing, where she applies her expertise in Human Resources to foster a positive and productive workplace. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources and Family Sciences from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. Janine is an active member of the Society for Human Resource Management and Central Nebraska HR, continuing to build on her professional knowledge and network. Outside of work, Janine is deeply committed to her community. She currently serves on the Grand Island Senior High Booster Club Board and as a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church. She has also served on the Leadership Unlimited Board of Directors and the Grand Island Senior High Touchdown Club. Janine’s community involvement extends beyond leadership roles; she and her family volunteer for organizations such as the Salvation Army, Project Hunger, and the Humane Society.

This marked her entry into the nonprofit world, where she discovered her passion for helping the underserved. Throughout her career, Misty has been dedicated to advocating for vulnerable populations and improving her community. In 2014, Misty earned her bachelor’s degree in behavioral science from Bellevue University, followed by a Master of Business Administration from Doane University in 2020. Her education, along with her extensive experience, has fueled her work as a victim advocate, forensic interviewer of children, and public health professional. Today, Misty is the Executive Director of Third City Community Clinic, where she continues her mission to improve healthcare access for underserved individuals in Grand Island. Misty is also the co-owner of Lily Rose Fresh Cut Flowers, a business she launched with her husband in 2020. Through Lily Rose, she has empowered local entrepreneurs by offering guidance and mentorship in creating business plans and strategies for success. Misty is committed to fostering a thriving local business community. In Spring 2024, Misty created the Grand Island Area Farmers Market, a project that has become a cornerstone of the community. What started as an idea has grown into a popular downtown event, attracting over 30 vendors each weekend. Misty’s passion, hard work, and innovative ideas have turned the market into an asset that supports local businesses and provides fresh goods. Despite the challenges of organizing such an event, Misty handles it with grace, always brainstorming new ways to enhance the market. Misty’s dedication to the Grand Island community, entrepreneurial spirit, and commitment to advocacy make her an invaluable leader. Janice Reeves was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska. After working various jobs, she found her stride in retail sales and management. At age 36, she moved to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where she later began a 13-year career in law enforcement. Following an on-the-job injury, she took a disability retirement—but not before completing her college degree and being accepted into the University of Nebraska Law School. After graduating, Jan worked in the Hall County Attorney’s Office in Grand Island, then spent over 20 years in private practice, primarily serving as a Guardian Ad Litem for abused and neglected children. Today, she’s back with the County Attorney’s Office, focusing exclusively on child welfare cases, often involving foster care. She currently advocates for the best interests of over 140 children. Jan is known for her tireless dedication, attention to detail, and her willingness to mentor others in the legal field. She has a true “open door, ringer on” policy—always available

Amber O’Hara is a dedicated and passionate educator at Howard Elementary School, where she currently teaches Preschool. With over two decades of experience in education, Amber has spent the last 21 years with Grand Island Public Schools, nurturing young minds and helping children thrive in a variety of classroom settings. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Amber’s career began in Kindergarten classrooms, where her joy-filled, high- achieving learning environments quickly became sought after by families across the district. Her classrooms were known not only for academic success but also for cultivating rich social-emotional growth and instilling a deep love for learning in every child. When the need arose for high-quality Preschool opportunities in Grand Island, Amber voluntarily stepped into this new role—driven by one powerful goal: to prepare the youngest learners to enter Kindergarten with confidence, curiosity, and a strong educational foundation. Her expertise in early learning and deep understanding of Kindergarten expectations have made her a top- tier Preschool educator, beloved by both students and families alike. Amber is known for creating a warm, inclusive classroom where children feel safe to explore, learn, and express themselves. Her greatest joy is watching her students discover the magic of learning and grow into enthusiastic young scholars. Dr. Megan Stone is an English teacher at Grand Island Senior High, currently in her 15th year of teaching and her sixth year back at GISH. With a passion for language, literature, and student growth, Megan brings both academic expertise and heartfelt dedication to her classroom every day. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Secondary English Education from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (2010), a Master of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Nebraska–Kearney (2014), a Master of Arts in Literature & Writing from Union Institute & University (2017), and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Union Institute & University (2023). At the heart of Megan’s teaching philosophy is a powerful truth: students are the root of her “why.” She is known for encouraging and challenging students to do their best, no matter the circumstances. Even when balancing many demands, Megan maintains a calm, steady presence and never lets stress overshadow her commitment to students.

Amanda Brunken has been the Health and Wellness Director at Bickford Senior Living in Grand Island, NE, since October 2022. With 15 years of experience in healthcare, Amanda’s journey began as a CNA, eventually earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Doane College. Raised in Ohio, she was the first in her family to graduate from college, inspired by her late grandmother, who ran a long-term care facility. Amanda has focused on age-related specialties throughout her career, including long-term care, hospice, and assisted living. Her personal mission is to “empower people to learn so that they live a life without regret,” a principle she incorporates into her care for patients, offering not just education and physical support, but emotional care as well. Tami Smith serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Heartland Health Center (HHC), a role she has held since January 2018. With over two decades of experience in the long-term care industry, Tami brought with her a wealth of knowledge, a strong commitment to values-based leadership, and a dedication to cultivating future leaders. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management and an Associate of Science in Health Information Management. These credentials, paired with her experience, have equipped her to guide HHC through both growth and challenge with steady leadership. Under Tami’s direction, Heartland Health Center has seen major expansion. She led the opening of three new clinic locations—an acute care clinic in Grand Island in 2019, a satellite clinic in Ravenna in 2020, and a long- anticipated clinic in Hastings in 2024. The Hastings site marks a milestone for HHC, offering medical, behavioral health, and soon, dental services. Notably, during the COVID-19 pandemic, HHC was the only Federally Qualified Health Center in Nebraska to experience growth, a testament to Tami’s resilience and vision. Her leadership is marked by accessibility, strategic thinking, and empathy. Her open-door policy and ability to navigate complex situations have fostered trust and collaboration. She offers not just guidance, but heartfelt support to team members in difficult times. Tami received the Excellence in Healthcare award in recognition of her outstanding leadership and commitment to improving healthcare access in underserved communities. Her strategic vision led to significant clinic expansion, and her unwavering dedication ensured that HHC continued to grow even during times of crisis. Through servant leadership and community- centered care, Tami has made a lasting impact on the lives of patients and healthcare professionals alike.
Libby Theoharis is a seasoned Occupational Therapist and Professor at Grand Island Central Community College (GICCC), with over 25 years of service to children and students. She holds degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Creighton University and teaches in the Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program at GICCC. Libby has published work on mental health for children and has presented nationally at the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) National Conference six times. In 2020, Libby led the creation of Ryder Park, the largest all-inclusive playground in Nebraska. This $2.4 million park, designed for children of all abilities, was awarded the National All-Inclusive Park of the Year Award in 2024. The ribbon-cutting ceremony in May 2024 marked a career milestone for Libby, who witnessed the direct impact of her efforts on children and families across Nebraska.

For over 10 years, Libby has directed the “Getting It Write” camp through GICCC, offering free therapy to children with fine motor, handwriting, and sensory needs. The camp has provided over 180 hours of therapy each summer. Libby has received recognition for her teaching and advocacy, including the Top 30 Under 30 award and the League of Excellence Award in 2020. She is known for her passionate dedication to children and occupational therapy and is highly regarded for her mentorship. Libby lives in Grand Island with her husband, Pete, and their five children, while continuing to teach and provide school-based therapy through GO Physical Therapy.

Aksam Dodban is a driven and compassionate student originally from Sudan. She moved to the United States at a young age with her parents and older brother, and later welcomed her younger sister, who was born in the U.S. Currently a student at Grand Island Senior High, Aksam is deeply involved in a wide range of academic and extracurricular activities that reflect her commitment to leadership, service, and the healthcare field. She is a member of the Nebraska College Preparatory Academy (NCPA), serves on the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC), participates in the school’s Public Relations Committee, and represents her school as a student ambassador. Aksam also mentors through Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) and leads as the president of the school’s HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) chapter. Her leadership is grounded in kindness, empathy, and a genuine desire to see others succeed. Known for her willingness to learn and grow, Aksam consistently seeks feedback and asks thoughtful questions to strengthen her understanding and improve herself. According to a recent nomination, she takes initiative in welcoming both new and returning members, and plays a key role in shaping how meetings are run, especially within her large and active HOSA chapter. Her peers describe her as a model of service leadership—someone who is quick to volunteer and always ready to contribute new ideas to make things better. Aksam takes her education seriously and works hard to master material across a variety of subjects, knowing this will support her goals in healthcare. She plans to begin her career as a nurse and eventually specialize in perfusion. Long-term, she hopes to work with international nonprofits or even start her own to serve communities around the world. Bella Lindell is a freshman at Centura High School who has embraced her first year with enthusiasm and a passion for learning and growth. She continues to participate in band and expanded her interest in the arts by joining One Acts. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Bella is active in both softball and cheerleading, all while maintaining a strong commitment to her academics. Angelica Morrow, a Central Nebraska native and 2014 graduate of Northwest High School, is a dedicated marketing professional and community leader. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln in 2018, double majoring in Marketing and Management. After six years as Vice President of Marketing at Five Points Bank in Grand Island, Angelica became Director of Marketing at Bosselman Enterprises in July 2024. Passionate about community service, Angelica serves on the Board of Trustees for the Greater Grand Island Community Foundation, currently chairing its Asset Development Committee. She is also a board member for Mentor Nebraska and a former chair of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Nebraska, as well as a past Big. Kelli Mayhew serves as the Marketing & Communications Coordinator at Grand Island Public Schools, where she has passionately supported students and staff since 2018. A native of Northeast Wisconsin, Kelli earned her Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before starting her career at The Grand Island Independent. Her dedication to community and professional growth is evident in her numerous leadership roles and volunteer commitments. Currently, Kelli serves on the Board of Directors for YWCA Grand Island, where she was formerly board chair. She also mentors with TeamMates, volunteers with the GIPS Foundation, and contributes to the Leadership Unlimited Board of Directors. Additionally, she is a volunteer barista at Story Coffeehouse in Third City Christian Church. Kelli has held the role of vice president for the Nebraska School Public Relations Association (NebSPRA) and dedicates time to reviewing awards for the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) and various state chapters. Kelli’s dedication to empowering others, especially women and girls, is a hallmark of her work. Joseline Reyna moved to the United States from Mexico at the age of nine and has since committed her life to community advocacy, leadership, and entrepreneurship. She graduated with distinction from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, earning a degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice. Passionate about service, Joseline has been actively involved with organizations such as the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Young Professionals of Color.
